This is only Lazio's third Champions League knockout tie - and their second against Bayern Munich.

In 2021 Bayern knocked them out at this stage, and in 2000 Lazio lost to Valencia in the quarter-finals.

The 2020-21 games were the only previous meetings between these sides, with Bayern winning 4-1 in Rome and 2-1 at home.

Ibrahima Traore smiles as he parks his black Range Rover outside the apartment block where his footballing story began.

He is back in Pantin, just outside the north-east corner of the peripherique - the ring road that separates central Paris from its suburbs.

Amid the din of sirens and the aroma of fast food, Traore buzzes in and takes the lift to the fifth floor. The doors open and his brother is waiting to welcome him back to their childhood home.

Inside, there are photos of the pair's Guinean father and Lebanese mother, as well as shots of grandparents and younger generations of the family. Dominating the view through the floor-to-ceiling windows, across a dual carriageway and tramline, is a vast sports complex, with two 4G football pitches.

"That's our Camp Nou, our Anfield," Traore says. "We used to jump over the fence at seven in the morning to practise our free-kicks. Before school and after school, it was football. Only football."

Real Sociedad mifielder Martín Zubimendi on manager Imanol Alguacil: "He is a key part of this team, the one who injected new life into the club, the people. Everyone really loves him.

"For me, he’s been really important. He’s the one who helped me transition from the reserves to the first team, adapting to professional football.

"I think he's the one who changed things [for Real Sociedad] four years ago.

"His way of working is very clear and demanding but gets good results. He’ll go down in the club's history."

Forward Mikel Oyarzabal added: “He’s the best coach Real Sociedad could have.

"He gets the club like many of the players and you can sense that when he delivers his message.

"We all know him as a person and we know we can count on him for whatever we need. He’s always there."

Bayern Munich's struggles this season cannot be put down to Harry Kane's finishing.

The England striker has scored 28 goals in 27 games for the German giants, with nobody else on double figures.

Team-mate Thomas Muller said: "So far it has been amazing, not just in terms of statistics or goals but also how he handles himself as a person as well as a player.

"He isn't selfish and thinking, 'Goal, goal, goal'. He just plays his football. It's team play. He gives his all to ensure in the end the team wins. He is a very funny guy off the pitch, so it's awesome."

Lazio's top scorer Ciro Immobile said: "Numbers are important for a striker. Being able to compare myself with top-level players like Harry Kane is a big motivation for me.

"It allows me to understand the level I have reached in my career. But it's not a direct match with Kane that matters but the match between Lazio and Bayern."

Kylian Mbappé has scored 43 goals in 67 appearances in the Champions League.

If he scores tonight he would overtake Raúl (43) for most goals scored in the competition while aged 25 or under, with only Lionel Messi (59) netting more than those two.

Mbappé has scored in each of his last five Champions League games against Spanish opposition, netting seven goals in total.

He is the last player to score a hat-trick against a Spanish side in the knockout stages of the competition, having done so against Barcelona in February 2021 in the last 16.

Paris St-Germain boss Luis Enrique: "We face this period of matches with a great deal of calm.

"We are used to facing difficult opposition, and this will be a time when the most important games are played.

"All the available players are ready, and we are going to create a great atmosphere with the help of our supporters in the hope of being better than Real Sociedad."

  8. 'A Champions League quarter-final would be massive for Lazio'published at 19:29 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

Lazio v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

European football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

Maurizio Sarri spoke of how it was a minor miracle to lead this Lazio side to a second place finish behind Napoli in Serie A last season, and even talks down a chance of a repeat this year.

The biggest problem for Maurizio Sarri and the expectations on Lazio this season is his predecessor Simone Inzaghi . He was the first Lazio coach to win trophies since the Sven-Goran Eriksson era, and Inzaghi continues to do this now at Inter.

But if Sarri could guide Lazio to the Champions League quarter-finals this season that would be massive.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is one of five players in this season's Champions League to have a hand in seven goals (four goals, three assists).

Four of the five are English, along with Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham, Arsenal's Bukayo Saka and Manchester City's Phil Foden.

Porto's Brazilian Galeno is the other.

Only in 2017-18 has Kane been involved in more Champions League goals in a single campaign (nine).

  10. Under-pressure Tuchel calls for 'reaction'published at 19:24 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

Bayern Munich boss Thomas TuchelImage source, Getty Images

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel is a man under pressure.

They are five points off German leaders Bayer Leverkusen after Saturday's 3-0 defeat by the leaders.

Having crashed out of the German Cup to lower-league Saarbrucken in November, the Champions League might be their best chance of silverware if Leverkusen don't slip up.

"It’s a good chance to show a reaction," said Tuchel. "It’s a new opponent, a new competition, a knockout game. I hope we take that and show the quality we need for a win.

"I can't imagine anyone underestimating this game, particularly after what happened on Saturday. It's very important that we don't just hammer ourselves with criticism as we need to play with confidence."

Real Sociedad cannot match Paris St-Germain for glitz and glamour but the French giants may well look at their Basque visitors and see a blueprint for the future.

According to analysis by Transfermarkt, external, there are just three academy graduates in PSG's Champions League squad - Presnel Kimpembe, Warren Zaire-Emery and Ethan Mbappe - compared to 13 at Real Sociedad, the most of any side left in the competition.

Tonight's meeting is another step on PSG's bid for European success, something the club have craved for almost as long as they have witnessed young, talented Parisians slip through their grasp.

Kingsley Coman is the most obvious. Once the club's youngest-ever player before being released to Juventus, he scored the winner as PSG lost their only Champions League final to Bayern Munich in 2020.

That is despite Paris' local league system, the Ligue de Paris Ile-de-France, boasting more players than the population of San Sebastian, where La Real are based.

PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi says the "flashy, bling-bling" era at PSG is over - and if that is true, he could do worse than look at how the club's last-16 opponents have become one of Europe's top producers of talent.

  13. How Lazio have done this seasonpublished at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

Lazio v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

Lazio qualified for this season's Champions League by finishing second in Serie A, their best finish since 2000.

They finished second in their Champions League group, above Feyenoord and Celtic, to reach this round.

But in Serie A they currently sit eighth in the table, outside the European places.

For Lazio they are huge underdogs in this tie but they are a very difficult side to break down. They can take encouragement from this season's Champions League group stage where they went unbeaten at home.

They have had inconsistency in their goalscoring of late but defensively they are pretty solid.

I think it has to happen for them on Wednesday, they need a good result if they are to have any chance of going through to the next round.

Hopefully Bayern Munich wins a trophy this season or else I will believe Harry Kane is cursed to have a trophyless career.

Two top teams in Europe played last night! It will take a lot to knock Real Madrid or City out! I don't see any other worthy winner yet! Paris St Germain are a team in transition and Liverpool and Arsenal don't have the squad to compete with such a tight title race in Premiership! Bayern Munich are another team in transition, I just don't see any other teams than Real Madrid and City in the race.

Their top scorer and talisman, Ciro Immobile, leads the line.

Lazio XI: Provedel; Marusic, Gila, Romagnoli, Hysaj; Guendouzi, Vecino, Luis Alberto; Isaksen, Immobile, Felipe Anderson

There are three alterations to the Bayern Munich XI from the team beaten heavily by Bundesliga title rivals Bayer Leverkusen.

This includes Eric Dier being dropped to the bench, as Thomas Tuchel appears to adopt a four man defence rather than the 3-4-3 deployed versus Leverkusen.

One man who keeps his place however is Harry Kane as the central striker.

Bayern XI: Neuer; Mazraoui, Upamecano, Kim, Guerrero; Kimmich, Goretzka; Sane, Muller, Musiala; Kane

Subs: Ulreich, Schmitt, De Ligt, Choupo-Moting, Dier, Zaragoza, Boey, Tel, Pavlovic

Harry Kane runs his hands through his hair.Image source, Reuters

In a tongue in cheek sort of way I have questioned Harry Kane's decision to move to Bayern Munich in recent weeks. He must be watching 'Ange-ball' back home and seeing his former side Tottenham flying and thinking "I'd love a bit of that."

The fact of the matter is, Bayern are already out of the German Cup, they are lagging behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga... They do still have a chance of winning the Champions League though.

Just imagine if Harry Kane doesn't win a trophy this season. What did he go to Bavaria for? To win a trophy!
