More from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to the BBC Sport: "Half-time we knew if we calmed down in the final third then we have a good chance to win the game.

"We knew exactly what we had to improve on and the boys put 100% into that. Second half we were all over them and it was a whirlwind.

"The first half was not a bad game and in the final third we were just in a rush.

"We didn't finish off the chances to our tactical standards. The boys did exceptionally well, one of the best I have seen us play and I enjoyed it very much.

"We have worked together for a while and I know usually what I can ask the players to do."

On young players stepping up: "It's not obviously perfect, we said it before how many games would have Jarell Quansah played if Joel Matip wasn't injured?

"Quansah has stepped up. Same with Conor [Bradley] and Bobby [Clark], James McConnell, a massive improvement in our young boys.

"Same with Ryan [Gravenberch]. He is very young so many things which are really nice and if you can make it out of a bad situation with something positive it feels great.

"It's a pretty challenging situation and I will let the boys recover and see who we can line up for the final."

On those missing making a comeback: "I don't know, I don't know if these boys can go again.

"We learn the lessons and we wait for further information and on Friday we will think how we play the final."

I have been a huge admirer of Rob Edwards since he was at Forest Green Rovers. He, and Luton, are great for the Premier League.

Luton boss Rob Edwards: "I thought first half was good, in the second half we saw Liverpool at their best - full throttle football.

"Their counter-press was brilliant and we played into their hands too often at some moments. The fans were incredible and it was difficult for the players to think when they got the two quick goals - it was hard to wrestle any control.

"Second half we kept going and tried to do the right things and we kept stepping forward. If we stayed back today it could have been more.

"A lot to be proud of, we can take positives from tonight and there was lots things good about us.

"We conceded from a set-piece which is disappointing, they [Liverpool] are switched on and bright.

"Ultimately, we came up short and Liverpool were better. There are big games coming up and there was a lot of good stuff tonight. We have Manchester City in the FA Cup next and then Aston Villa who are having an incredible season.

"Every game is difficult in this league."

Alan: Cody Gapko quietly gets on with his work - a very good signing. Alexis Mac Allister is much more suited to a more progressive role and Luis Diaz is getting back to his best.

Luton boss Rob Edwards, speaking to BBC Sport: "I wasn't surprised how the first half went. In the second half we played into their hands and their counter pressing was incredible, we experienced that full throttle football.

"We have got a way of playing that doesn't make it comfortable for teams. We continue to build and go in the right direction. We will learn from our mistakes tonight.

"We have to learn from it and take it. The second half was difficult. We have to bounce back.

"We knew today was going to be a really big task. We showed for long periods we are a good team and we can compete."

More from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: "Exceptional game. I liked lots of the first half, but I saw that the boys and crowd didn’t like it as much.

"We started okay and you have to get used to an opponent, then they score their goal but everything was good until the final third and then we were in a rush.

"I told the boys it was a top game and we have to be calmer in decisive moments, then there were fireworks and wonderful goals - fantastic night and it is just really good."

On standout players: "He [Luis Diaz] put it in the back of the net, Cody Gakpo what a game and Ryan Gravenberch too - they were all exceptional.

"Caoimhin Kelleher had to fight against eight to nine men just to get a hand on the ball from set-pieces.

"Then the kids came on and did an incredible job. It is cool how culture educated the next generation.

"But, in general the stadium and the team together changed the game - it was exceptional."

On the academy: "The boys are ready and I wouldn’t do that if they weren’t ready. I wouldn't bring Bobby [Clark] on if he wasn’t, it looked a bit like Luton were done so we trust them [young players] a lot just with what they do."

On injured players coming back for the final: "No. We don’t know nothing. We have to see, but I said it before the game as long as we have 11 players we will go for it.

"Will we be big favourites? Definitely not.

"Since we played them [Chelsea] they have improved a lot and it will be tricky, this was exceptional tonight."

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk: “Very happy. I think we had plenty of opportunities in the first half and upfront we didn’t do it, but it has been an eventful game.

“Obviously I try to be important at set-pieces not only defensively but offensively as well. There was a couple of time I was free but the ball didn’t come, but yes it was a good equaliser.”

On half-time team talk: “Nobody was satisfied with the first half. We were rushing in the final third and we didn’t find the right pass.

"Obviously it is quite normal to become nervous upfront when you are not making the right decisions.

“The reaction shown today was outstanding and something we need for the rest of the season - today was a big one.

“I try to step up from the first second I think it was key to stay calm. Luton are a good side and they play football taking some risks and when we won the ball we had to punish them. Overall it’s a great evening and time to focus on the weekend."

On the League Cup final: “It is important for us to look ahead who we face but today was an important and difficult one in many reasons. I don’t think there was any injuries from tonight and now it is time to focus on the final.”

Liverpool's Harvey Elliott, speaking to Sky Sports: "As I said before the start of the game, Luton are a tough team and we had to dig deep and show the desire.

"The final bit wasn't really there in the first half. But football is a game of two halves and in the second half we showed it. We had to be a lot better than we were in the first half.

"To be fair we're not really thinking about the [Carabao Cup] final. It was about getting the job done tonight. It's a big game at the weekend but tonight was a final. Each and every game is a final. It's a busy period and we need to recover for the weekend.

"We are a resilient team and we want to fight for one another. It's a hectic season. For the lads that are injured we wish them well and we want to come back quickly."
