These Rangers supporters are up for this. They sense the wonderful opportunity before them. It's absolutely deafening.

Benfica have a team and real, real quality and that is my concern for tonight.

The fans were on top of the Benfica players last week, you could feel that in the stadium. They were just waiting to pounce on a stray pass, the stadium was quite a negative atmosphere.

Yes, there's the extra Rangers support tonight, but the Benfica players don't have the pressure of being in their big huge stadium getting pelters off their own fans.

They didn't hit top form last week but they still had better chances.

  7. Clement urges Rangers braverypublished at 17:36 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

Rangers manager Philippe Clement on TNT Sports: "It would be an amazing achievement [to progress]. We have a really nice building next to the stadium which has a museum. A night like tonight could go in the museum.

"It's always interesting to see where the spaces are to play more. I was happy with the organisation [last week] but wasn't too pleased with our bravery on the ball.

"We focussed on that the last few days because we've not had much time on the training pitch.

"The players need to be brave and don't be scared to make mistakes. They need to feel the electricity of the fans, and give electricity to the fans."

All three of the meetings between Rangers and Benfica in Europe have ended level, while both teams have scored at least twice in all three fixtures (3-3 and 2-2 in the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League and 2-2 in the first leg this season).

  9. 'Quarter-final more than realistic for Rangers'published at 17:31 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

    Rangers v Benfica (17:45)

    Martin Dowden
    BBC Sport Scotland at Ibrox

The incentive for Rangers is mammoth. They laid the foundation for progression in Lisbon with a mature display that might have been even better with a bit of luck. A quarter-final place seems more than realistic now.

But Rangers are depleted and will heavily rely on the cauldron of Ibrox to raise them against a top-class side, who seemed to underperform in the first leg.

Benfica have talent, it's just whether they bring it in this environment under the pressure they have been enduring of late.

What Rangers have is a recent European pedigree at this level. They also have a manager who is draining every ounce from this squad, game after game right now.

  10. Quarter ton for Di Mariapublished at 17:28 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

    Rangers v Benfica (17:45)

Angel di María is playing his 25th match in the Europa League for Benfica tonight.

Only Luisao (56), Oscar Cardozo (42), Maxi Pereira (35) and Nuno Gomes (35) have played more in the competition since its rebranding in 2009-10.

Those names... pure Europa League heritage.

Nicolas Otamendi is a terrific player, no doubt about it. But he's already seen the best years of his career.

Rangers need to try to isolate him.

  13. 'No team gets easy game here'published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

    Rangers v Benfica (agg 2-2) (17:45)

    Steven Thompson
Former Rangers striker on BBC Sportsound

The Europa League form here has been brilliant. No team will come here and get an easy game.

I think expectations raised after the draw in Lisbon, but you have to temper that.

I don't think Benfica quite reached the level they were capable of.

Yes, Rangers will get the extra bit from the home support, but they are still playing against a very good side who underperformed last Thursday.

When failing to win the first leg at home in a two-legged knockout stage tie in European competition, Benfica have only managed to progress on one of the previous five occasions (v Ajax in the round of 16 in the Champions League in 2021-22 - 2-2 at home, 1-0 away).

  15. Sunday in the capitalpublished at 17:13 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

    Rangers v Benfica (agg 2-2) (17:45)

Rangers spent their Sunday night in Leith, where they dispatched nine-man Hibs to book their place in the last four of the Scottish Cup.

Having already won the League Cup, Philippe Clement's Premiership leaders are right in the frame for a domestic treble.

Victory tonight, one way or another, could have Gers fans whispering the Q-word...

    Rangers v Benfica (agg 2-2) (17:45)

Roger Schmidt says his Benfica side must show they "deserve to go to the quarter-finals".

"It would be a great achievement," he adds. "We will be ready for extra-time and ready for penalties. We prepare for every situation.

"I expect a game which is more open than last week. Now we start again at zero.

"There is big motivation for Rangers but also for us. We are still able to do something in three competitions."

Benfica got back to winning ways after three games without one on Sunday.

It was fairly comfortable against Estoril Praia, with the 3-1 victory meaning they stay one point behind league leaders Sporting.

Roger Schmidt made five changes to his side, resting the likes of Angel di Maria, Nicolas Otamendi and Joao Neves, who are all recalled.

Orkun Kokcu, Marcos Leonardo and Tiago Gouveia netted the goals.

  20. 'Potential season-defining night'published at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

    Rangers v Benfica (agg 2-2) (17:45)

    Kheredine Idessane
    BBC Scotland

This could be a season-defining night for Rangers.

The belief and boost a win would provide for the rest of the campaign on all fronts would be huge.

Benfica will be well aware that a couple of years ago, Dortmund, Braga and RB Leipzig were all unable to cope with a big Europa League night at Ibrox. Real Betis and Sparta Prague have already been beaten there this season.

The only problem might be personnel. Just when Rangers think their injury list couldn’t possibly get any longer, another issue arises.

Dujon Sterling is out after hobbling off in the capital at the weekend, closely followed by Ross McCausland, who manages to make the bench.
