That [the missed penalty] should give the Republic of Ireland a bit of a lift and a bit of energy now.

The crowd are excited now and the Republic need to build on this.

I don't think referee Lina Lehtovaara is going to be on many Irish Christmas card lists. She may well be on a very different list, if Louise Quinn has her way.

The ball deflected off Alessia Russo and onto the raised arm of Quinn, who was barely a yard away.

It was one of those handballs that is technically correct in the law, but just feels really harsh.

I think if the referee took her time over the first one, she didn't do that for the second one.

She hasn't got time to react to it because of where it is but if your hand is high...

  4. MISSED PENALTYpublished at 20:01 British Summer Time 9 April

    Republic of Ireland 0-2 England

    Alex Greenwood hits the post!

The England defender goes to the keeper's left this time, but it strikes the base of the woodwork, bounces across the face of goal and away.

A huge left-off for the home side.

    Republic of Ireland 0-2 England

    Another one!

It's another handball, as Louise Quinn's arm is raised high as the ball deflects up into it.

She looks understandably furious, it is quite a harsh call.

While this game has not gone well for the hosts so far, it has certainly been well attended.

All three of the Irish home qualifiers will be played at Aviva Stadium, which is a great move for the women's team.

Republic of Ireland have had a decent amount of the ball, but have not made nearly as good use of it as England.

That said, a long ball aimed towards Alessia Russo has just flown wastefully out of play.

She is a brilliant goalkeeper with her hands but also with her feet.

She can pick players out with her right foot, with her left foot, long and short. That changes the way the no.10s play too, and the way in which they can receive it.

The tempo and accuracy of England's passing is much better than against Sweden. Has put them on Easy Street already.

A quarter of the game gone, and it could not have gone much worse for the hosts.

England are stroking the ball around comfortably, and most of the noise inside the Aviva Stadium is from the away end.

Such a good penalty from Alex Greenwood.

She had the majority of the crowd here in Dublin booing her and there were people waving flags and scarves behind the goal to try and distract her.

She kept her cool and did the business.

  12. 'Harsh on the Republic of Ireland'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 9 April

    Republic of Ireland 0-2 England

    Aine O'Gorman
Former Republic of Ireland defender on RTE

It is an unnatural position by the letter of the law, but it is very harsh on the Republic of Ireland as initially I thought it was a brave block.

The Republic now need to find a way to reset as they did against France and go again.

She took her time over her decision [the referee]. Whether she was waiting for the assistant but for me, her arms are up high and not in a natural position.

The referee made the right call.

That is a sickener for Republic of Ireland. Ruesha Littlejohn was only a couple of yards away from Jess Park and the shot was fiercely hit by the England player - however the Irish player's arm was outstretched, in an unnatural position.

Finnish referee Lina Lehtovaara took her time before giving the penalty, but it probably was the right call.

    Alex Greenwood penalty (19 mins)

With regular penalty taker Georgia Stanway benched, Alex Greenwood steps up.

The Man City defender makes no mistake, striking to her left as Courtney Brosnan heads the other way.

That's the goal England were looking for. The atmosphere has been great so far but it fell very flat when Lauren James stroked that in.

There wasn't too much celebration from the England players. They have a long way to go yet.

  18. Renard finds the opener in Swedenpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 9 April

    Sweden 0-1 France

Major news elsewhere in this group, where France captain Wendie Renard has put her side ahead in Sweden with just 10 minutes remaining.

France would be clear at the top of Group A3 with six points from six, as it stands.

England would love one goal to lead quickly to two or three.

They win a corner quickly after scoring, which is headed away. Keira Walsh then nearly gets in down the right, but is denied by a strong Ruesha Littlejohn tackle.

Lauren James does not miss from there.

It is a brilliant delivery into the back post and they get the lucky bounce and it falls to Lauren James' feet. 99 times out of 100, that is finding the bottom corner.

    What a wonderful finish.
