That is so unfortunate, it has been such a positive start for the Republic of Ireland. England just showed their clinical streak, but now we have to regroup and go again.

GOAL - Republic of Ireland 0-1 Englandpublished at 19:43 British Summer Time 9 April

    Lauren James (12 mins)

    A settler for the visitors.

Lucy Bronze nods down a deep Keira Walsh cross, it bounces off Anna Patten and falls perfectly for Lauren James to sweep home.

That could be a major blow for the hosts, and has punctured the atmosphere somewhat.

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 England

It has been a closely fought opening 10 minutes, but England are just beginning to assert their authority with a spell of possession on the edge of the Irish box.

Republic of Ireland hold firm and make a break into English territory. It comes to nothing, but keeping possession amid such a feverish atmosphere is a good thing.

A first shot on target for England, as Lauren James hangs in a cross and Alessia Russo guides a header down.

It is straight at Courtney Brosnan though, a simple first save for the home number one.

There are quite a lot of players in this England team that I think fans will be very excited to see out there.

Jess Park is certainly one of them.

Lauren Hemp involved for the first time, cutting in from the left and driving in a low ball which is blocked out for a corner.

It was the first test for England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton and she passed it with flying colours, collecting it comfortably.

  15. 'It's Hampton's moment to shine'published at 19:29 British Summer Time 9 April

Republic of Ireland v England (19:30 BST)

    England

England manager Sarina Wiegman speaking to ITV about her team selection: "No it is not down to injury [picking Hampton over Earps]. We are in a luxury position that we have two incredible goalkeepers. As we have seen Mary [Earps] on Friday she did a great job but I also think Hannah [Hampton] is doing a great job for Chelsea. She is growing into competition with Mary and this is a moment for her to shine."

On Leah Williamson's return: "We will see in the game. It is really good to have her back as a leader. There are many leaders in this team. It is great to have her back. It is great for her, great for the team and hopefully she will enjoy the game and plays well."

On midfielders: "We think Republic of Ireland will drop a little deeper and the spaces are small. Jess Park has done really well too at her club and is good in tight spaces, while I think our other midfielders are good at that too and we will play a little higher so it's a good opportunity for them to play."

On Jess Carter's start: "Also we hope and we expect that we will be in their half and she needs to feed to forwards and midfielders and also a bit more defensive security. You don't want to get counter-attacked. I am happy with what Niamh [Charles] does but it is a good opportunity for Jess."

After England’s opening game of the campaign, that underwhelming and frustrating game with Sweden, they know that they need to perform tonight.

This isn’t a must-win game. After this evening there are four more fixtures - but England will be aware that they can’t afford to drop many more points, and this will certainly be a game where they target all three.

While there is not much by way of historic rivalry between these teams in women's football, there is a refreshingly traditional look to the strips both sides will wear this evening.

England will be in white shirts, blue shorts, white socks with their goalkeeper in all orange.

Republic of Ireland, of course, will be in green shirts, white shorts and green socks. Their keeper will be in all pink.
