Everton 1-0 Brentford
It's given. I don't fully understand what the check was for but Everton have the lead, that's the most important thing.

VAR is seeing if James Garner is offside in the build-up.
Idrissa Gueye
Everton take the lead thanks to Idrissa Gueye.
Moments after he has a long-range shot blocked, he finds Jack Harrison with a ball over the top.
Harrison's cross hits Jarrad Branthwaite and then a couple of Brentford defenders before landing to Gueye, who slams a fine shot into the top corner.
But VAR are checking this.
Everton 0-0 Brentford
Only Liverpool (24) and Fulham (17) have hit the woodwork more times in the Premier League this season than Everton (16).
In Germany, Bayer Leverkusen are 34 minutes away from losing their unbeaten season. The Bundesliga champions trail at home to Stuttgart.
Everton 0-0 Brentford
From the corner Jack Harrison has a shot blocked and Ashley Young can't pick out Youssef Chermiti with a ball over the top.

Corner to Everton. Mark Flekken gets a glancing punch to it to make it a corner on the other side.

It was a magnificent effort from Dwight McNeil!
He comes short for the ball, gets it, lays it off, asks for it again, clear his feet and hits it from about 25 yards. It is an outswinger, drifts away from Mark Flekken, headed right into that top right corner, but clips the bar and bounces out.

The crossbar is still shaking.

WOOF.
Everton winger Dwight McNeil gets the ball almost 25 yards out, lets it roll across his body and then rifles an absolute thunderbolt which flies past Mark Flekken but it cannons off the crossbar.
The best two moments of the game have come in the past four minutes.
Everton 0-0 Brentford
Two shaky moments in a row from Ashley Young at left-back but Brentford can't take advantage of either.

Re Tarkowski & Branthwaite for England, is that the same defensive pair that shipped six goals against a rubbish Chelsea side the other day? No thanks.

First shot on target of the match. A sign this is going to get better? I hope so.
Everton 0-0 Brentford
Best chance of the game by far as two England team-mates face each other.
Mathias Jensen whips in a fine low cross from the right which finds Ivan Toney at the far side of the box but Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford makes himself big to keep out the Brentford striker's first-time effort.
Everton 0-0 Brentford
Everton have a free-kick in their own half and Jordan Pickford moans that Ivan Toney, in the opposition half, isn't 10 yards away. Eventually he takes a clever free-kick down the left but Everton can't turn it into a chance.
Everton 0-0 Brentford
The players are back out and the second half is under way.
HT: Everton 0-0 Brentford
Everton have stopped the opposition from scoring a first-half goal in 23 of their 35 games, no team has done this more in the Premier League this season.
Also... Everton have failed to score a first-half goal in 23 of their 35 games. Only Luton Town (24) and Sheffield United (25) have failed to score in more first halves.
OK we can probably knock that one on the head now. Let's turn our focus back to this amazing football match.

It's been a lacklustre first half with not too many opportunities either way. Plenty to think about for both managers at half time.
