That's it for the action in Sao Paulo today. We'll be back with online coverage of FP3 from 12:30 GMT tomorrow, with BBC Two clicking into gear at 12:55 GMT. Make sure you join us.

Make sure you check out Andrew Benson's report of the second qualifying session in the mean time.

  2. 'Things we can improve'published at 17:51

Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton: "I've been focusing on my programme and trying to dial in the car. I was kind of stuck with the choices I'd made from P1. The balance isn't bad but there's a few things we can improve."

Fourteenth? That's actually quite a few.

  4. 'The asphalt is crumbling'published at 17:44

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg: "The gap was not a true reflection because Lewis got his settings wrong. They've changed the kerbs a lot - we can't attack the kerbs like we did last year. And the asphalt is crumbling up a lot."

  5. So what have we learned?published at 17:40

Here are things to take away from today's two sessions.

The Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton will probably be quickest in qualifying. But I guess we already knew that.

The Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel are off the qualifying pace, but could be competitive in the race. We knew that too, right?

And the McLaren car, which let Fernando Alonso down today, isn't that great. Did we know that? (It's a rhetorical question).

    Nico Rosberg

Nico Rosberg can be satisfied with that FP2 performance, going quicker than his team-mate Lewis Hamilton by almost half a second.

The chequered flag is unfurled. Time to sneak in one last lap boys.

Nico Rosberg will finish the day fastest, with a 1:12.385.

Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen follow. So that's hypothetically a Mercedes-Ferrari lockout in the front two rows.

But this ain't qualifying, folks, so let's see tomorrow.

Max Verstappen's Toro Rosso is tucked away into the garage. That's him done for the day.

Lewis Hamilton's stint of nine laps has been full of peaks and troughs - some near one min 16 secs, others nearer one min 22 secs. In comparison, Sebastian Vettel has been knocking out consistent one min 17s.

Williams have been talking about challenging Ferrari for a place on the second row of the grid. Felipe Massa is P10 and Valtteri Bottas P5. They'll need to get a shufty on tomorrow.

  15. 'My tyres are dead'published at 17:20

Max Verstappen nails the award for over exaggeration of the day.

"My tyres are dead," he shrieks over the radio, while driving on tyres that keep him firmly on the track.

Here's that moment Daniel Ricciardo got a bit wobbly in the pit lane earlier. A very impressive place to mess up.

No need to tell us how those tyres are Nico, that spin off the track you've just done tells a story.

Actually he locks up the left front in the final turn and is into the plentiful stretch of crescent-shaped grass there.

Nico Rosberg is asked to give an update on how the tyres are doing.

He either says "they feel like chewing gum" or "I don't like doing that".

It seems to be the latter. Nico no like sharing.

This luminous vis-spray has been a bit of a fad so far in Brazil. It looks like someone exploded Slimer from Ghostbusters.

The spray helps engineers track car performance using fancy cameras and technology.

I'd quite fancy covering myself in it for a day so they could analyse my movements.

    Don't dwell on that thought.

Very few movers and shakers at the moment as teams go through their long runs. Nico Rosberg is still top of the pile, followed by Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.
