I won't pretend to understand how the study came to its conclusions - a lot of science involved - but I was fascinated to note that Christian Fittipaldi was listed as the 12th greatest driver of all time.

That's Fittipaldi who scored a grand total of 12 points in his three seasons in Formula 1...

Meanwhile, there was some good news for Fernando Alonso during the break. The Spaniard, who missed the Bahrain Grand Prix because of a broken rib, has gone from provisionally cleared to race, to officially cleared to race this weekend.

An FIA statement said: "As a result of a medical examination undertaken following Free Practice One, the FIA F1 Medical Delegate and the Chief Medical Officer of the Chinese Grand Prix have ruled that Fernando Alonso is fit to take part in all remaining sessions this weekend.

"However, as with this morning’s session, in case of any abnormal symptoms the driver has been informed that he must stop his car immediately."

Hello! Welcome along to our coverage of second practice for the Chinese Grand Prix.

If you powered through the night to follow first practice, you will be well aware it was a very unusual session.

Lewis Hamilton spun twice in the same area, Kevin Magnussen and Felipe Massa suffered mysterious tyre failures, while Nico Rosberg was fastest before that late engine issue.

Were a couple of these little critters causing mayhem in Shanghai earlier?

Technical gremlins appeared to run riot in first practice, as Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen suffered tyre failures, while there was a late engine issue for Nico Rosberg.

Will they strike again in second practice?

Well, we are going to wrap things up for a couple of hours but if you can read Andrew Benson's thoughts on an unusual first practice session and we'll be back at 06:30 BST.

Grab 40 winks if you are following in Europe (no harm in grabbing 40 winks wherever you are to be honest) and see you in a bit.

Track, tyres, cars? All a bit of a mystery over what caused Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen's left rear woes.

We know that certainly in the case of Massa it was not a puncture but as for the other issues? We wait and see...

This afternoon we will get a much better indication of how things are shaping up because the track will have cleaned up. It is very early days but Mercedes, as ever, looking strong from the start.

I'd like to think Ferrari can do a bit more as the weekend progresses.
