Early days but Sebastian Vettel is top of the board in P2.

The Ferrari driver has rattled off four laps and is the only man to break 1:40.00 in the session so far.

Sergio Perez and Kimi Raikkonen follow.

  3. 'A more elegant solution'published at 12:06 British Summer Time 29 April 2016

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner speaking on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra: “We’ve tried to come up with an elegant and safe solution that still looks in keeping with F1.

"We have given all the data to the FIA and hopefully it is perceived as a more elegant solution than the halo we saw earlier in the year. The main thing was the visibility from the driver - and the feedback was from that point of view it was fine.”

  4. Mercedes use engine tokenspublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 29 April 2016

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer

"It has emerged that Ferrari are not the only engine manufacturer to spend engine tokens. The Italian team has a combustion change and now Mercedes have confirmed that they have used two of the 13 tokens they had remaining on a modification to the fuel system, which does not require the fitting of new engines."

  7. 'Head protection must come in'published at 11:55 British Summer Time 29 April 2016

    Tom Clarkson
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

"I’ve done a bit of a vox pop around the paddock on the subject of driver head protection, following Red Bull’s test of their ‘aerodeck’ this morning. Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda said that it would fundamentally change the DNA of F1 but that it must come in - and he thinks the Red Bull solution is better than the ‘halo’ tested by Ferrari pre-season.

"Jos Verstappen said it was not what people expect of F1 but if it saves one life it has to be worth it, and David Coulthard said it was a good thing and it needs to come in."

So, we've got to the point where we're watching replays of a man getting in and out of a car.

F1 really is the bees knees sometimes.

    But I digress.

What I really want to know - is what does the aeroscreen remind you of?

Although, they don't always look great.

This Porsche reminds me of Beetlejuice - but I guess that's less to do with the roof.

Wait. My boss tells me this car is gorgeous. So, I've decided to change my mind and announce this Porsche is brilliant.

    (Yes, I'm a suck up).

One of the concerns about the aeroscreen is that it is a step away from a closed cockpit.

"It just ain't F1," say the traditionalists.

    And that's true.

But cars can still look super awesome with a roof.

Look at this Mercedes from Le Mans.

LOOK AT IT. If you're not sobbing like a child at it's sheer beauty, then I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave.

The aeroscreen tested by Daniel Ricciardo in first practice reminded me somewhat of those old-school plastic golf visors. The variety cliched American businessman would wear with a pair of pink and green chequered trousers while hacking around a Floridian pitch and putt.

Well, I've had a look around. And I found this piece of tremendous kit - which could very well have been plonked on to the Red Bull this morning.

I think the website selling them may have used Google translate for the description, however:

"It is a good companion for your Hiking, Golf, Tennis, Fishing, Outdoor Activity,Etc

    Sunscreen,protect eyes,beautiful skin,green ring,where natural non-toxic

Comfortable to wear, soft and thick material, give you a fit size and feel cool

    Fashion, lightweight and convenient design

Different methods measurement, the error is the normal2-3cm."

    In the words of Beyonce.

"I can feel your halo. I can see your halo."

Has anyone dished out the Booker Prize yet? Because THAT IS POETRY.

But it is another sort of halo that has us talking today. The 'halo' safety device trialled by Kimi Raikkonen at pre-season testing looked to be the front runner when it came to potential methods of stopping debris hitting drivers.

But a new contender has come along the rails today - the aeroscreen, as seen on Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull in this morning's first practice.

Alfonso Celis also got a practice run in the Force India, but made little impact in his 23 laps.
