Lewis Hamilton locks up going into Turn One - he styles it out by cutting the corner and is back on track.

The man behind that visor (although it's been taken off now), is up into P4. Rosberg, Hamilton and Bottas are in one to three...

As I type, Ricciardo leaps ahead of Bottas. None of these times are quickies yet though.

Here's how the aeroscreen looks on track.

Honestly? It looks fine. But Red Bull could make a tank look fine.

  5. Ferrari upgrade for Sochipublished at 08:32 British Summer Time 29 April 2016

"Sebastian Vettel has admitted in Russia for the first time that the stress is mounting at Ferrari after an unconvincing and messy start to the year. The four-time champion said there was “a natural sense of pressure, especially from myself. There were races I was very happy and occasions when I know I didn’t do the best job possible. The expectation from the outside is not as high as it is from the inside.”

Ferrari have an engine upgrade - believed to revolve around the combustion system - and a new front wing for Sochi. But Vettel said he still did not expect to be on level terms with Mercedes. “I hope we can be very close this weekend, first of all have a smooth weekend and see where we are,” he said. “We know we are probably not close enough but the race is on Sunday and there is always a chance.”

Take all the information in the post below and replace the words Jenson Button with Sebastian Vettel and the word McLaren with Ferrari.

Same turn, same mistake, same result.

  7. Button spinspublished at 08:29 British Summer Time 29 April 2016

Jenson Button goes into the left-hander Turn 15 a tad too wide and he ends up facing the wrong way in the middle of the track.

He nudges out of the way of a passing Williams and I reckon Jenson will be taking his McLaren back to the garage,

Sergey Sirotkin is out on his own home track for the first time in a Renault.

He's been here before, having taken part in first practice in Sochi for Sauber in 2014.

Three times of worth are in the bag. Two are from Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton has gone 1:39.337, with Nico Rosberg 1:39.416.

    Manor's Pascal Wehrlein has registered a 1:44.647.

And there's more times coming through...

  12. Hamilton to stick with second enginepublished at 08:17 British Summer Time 29 April 2016

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer

"Lewis Hamilton has not had a lot of good news this season, but there is one small crumb of comfort for the world champion. The engine problem that led to him starting the Chinese Grand Prix from the back of the grid has not resulted in that unit being lost. It is in Russia as a spare for him. The turbo and MGU-H have had to be replaced, which would theoretically mean he would now be on his third of five of those elements were the engine to be used. But Mercedes’ plan is for Hamilton to use his second engine until the next scheduled change."

"We've had over 100 years of open cockpit cars and now we're looking to change that. lt will be interesting if the halo or aeroscreen is adopted to see how history looks at that. We are reacting to incidents that have happened outside of F1."

    Something else?

    Nothing at all?

    #bbcf1? Yes.

    Lewis has gone a looping.

Mercedes' Hamilton heads into Turn 1 and his back end wobbles, sending him a few yards off track. Concentration slip?

  16. Has the risk expectancy around F1 changed?published at 08:10 British Summer Time 29 April 2016

    Mark Gallagher
BBC Radio 5 live Formula 1 analyst

"It's very interesting that in 2016 that the perception is F1 drivers shouldn't be risking their lives."

Here comes Lewis Hamilton, on a set of the soft tyres.

Ricciardo is back in the garage and his aeroscreen visor is being lifted off. Will that be the last we ever see of it?

Although, this is better than anything I've come up with - bravo.

Daniel Ricciardo and the aeroscreen are out. I can confirm the Red Bull driver has managed to drive in straight lines and around corners without any concerns.

Both of the Ferraris are on track too - they are sans aeroscreen.

    FP1 begins

Now then. Here we go, 90 minutes of free practicing. The first of the weekend and all eyes are on Daniel Ricciardo and his riot shield... I mean aeroscreen.

You put a lid on that bad boy and you've got a full on fighter jet cockpit.

I'm sure I heard someone call it a canape... I think they meant canopy. Unless they think it looks like a vol-au-vent.
