Meanwhile, Max Verstappen continues to make an impression. He's P5, quicker than Nico Rosberg after clocking 1:25.939 on mediums.

A new name at the top of the order as Kimi Raikkonen posts a 1:24.176 but that's on the soft tyres. Lewis Hamilton, who held P1 before the Finn, set his time on the mediums.

If were to describe Fernando Alonso's radio exchange just now in emojis it would be a happy face followed immediately by a sad face. It went:

"Erm, Fernando, you are P1 right now!"

"It's OK?"

"Yeah I think so...oh no you've gone P2 now."

Well, it was good while it lasted.

"Palmer is back in the garage and talking to his race engineer. From what I can gather, and my reading of body language is poor, it would appear he doesn't know what happened. He looks incredibly disappointed."

The home fans have something to cheer as Fernando Alonso goes fastest, clocking 1:26.268 but it is an all too brief stay as Lewis Hamilton pips him with 1:25.607.

Busy, busy, busy! Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Daniel Ricciardo and Jenson Button are straight onto the track.

Jolyon Palmer's Renault has been recovered, any debris swept away and we are back under way.

That's a second puncture today for Renault after Esteban Ocon, who stood in for Jolyon Palmer in first practice, limped back to the pits in this morning's session with a deflated tyre.

Now the session is red flagged as Jolyon Palmer climbs out of his Renault.

Jolyon Palmer is out for the first time today...annndd there's a problem already. 

He's suffered a puncture to the left rear and he pulls the Renault off the track.

The virtual safety car is out.

Times are popping up on the board with Kimi Raikkonen leading the way with 1:26.525. 

There's a brief flutter of the yellow flags as Segio Perez runs wide in the Force India, but it is a short trip into the gravel as he swiftly gets back on the track.

Max Verstappen's Red Bull has just had a wipe down and the teenager is all set to head out for the first time this afternoon.

Romain Grosjean, Felipe Nasr, Pascal Wehrlein and Kimi Raikkonen are all out now.

Second practice is officially under way and out first is Rio Haryanto in the Manor.
