Moving away from the Mercedes show and there's plenty more times on the board now. Felipe Massa is third fastest with 1:18.914, with Daniil Kvyat, Carlos Sainz, Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen behind him on the timing screen.

The first effort from a Ferrari comes from Sebastian Vettel. He's 14th fastest after a 1:20.696.

Ultra is a great name for a tyre. It reminds me of the kind of thing that flashes up on the screen when you pull off a combo on Street Fighter or something.

They are also proving to be very quick as Lewis Hamilton finds even more around the Monaco track, clocking 1:16.588

"A great psychological battle between the two Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton trying to knock Nico Rosberg's confidence even in these early stages."

We are just 15 minutes into first practice but Lewis Hamilton is absolutely flying! On his seventh lap on the ultra softs he slams a 1:17.381 on the table. Nico Rosberg also improves, but is 1.204s off Hamilton's best effort so far.

The battle between the two, psychologically at least, seems to be already under way.

"And right there, we have seen the difference between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg’s first flying lap was a one minute 23.758, followed by a 1:21.712. Then Hamilton did his - and immediately hit 1:20.240. That’s 1.472 seconds quicker. On his first flying lap. Rosberg - on his third lap - then sneaked ahead with a 1:20.141. Hamilton followed up with a 1:18.302 - 1.839secs quicker. That’s raw, blistering talent. No other word for it."

Nico Rosberg puts down the first timed lap with a 1:23.758 before improving with a 1:21.712.

No messing about from Lewis Hamilton as his second flyer sees him go 1:18.302.

Lewis Hamilton was on a different set of wheels earlier this week, with his preferred mode of transport away from the track being a bike.

Both he and Nico Rosberg are out on the track now, also giving the ultra softs a try.

Good point Amit. If he wins the world championship this year, how do you think h would be looked back on in 10 years time?

Kevin Magnussen is wasting no time in giving those purple boots a scootch. The K-Mag is straight out on ultra softs.

Getting its first outing in 2016 will be Pirelli's ultrasoft tyre.

The purple-marked tyre ism one of three dry-weather compounds offered to the teams this weekend, along with the yellow-marked soft and the red-marked supersoft.

Asked about the ultrasofts in the pre-race press conference, Sebastian Vettel said: "It is a bit like asking a rabbit how his first date went. If it went well he will probably tell you it was great and didn't last very long."

    No, me neither.

The last race, of course, saw history made as Max Verstappen become the youngest ever race winner with a superb victory on his Red Bull debut.

Daniel Ricciardo's chance of climbing the top step of the podium was ended by what proved to be a bad strategy call by Red Bull, but he's all smiles in Monaco, and with good reason. He arrives with an engine upgrade while Verstappen sticks with the older spec engine.

“Regardless of the events of Spain, the championship situation remains as it was for Lewis Hamilton.

"At 43 points adrift of his team-mate, he needs to start beating him - i.e. winning - soon. Yet he seems remarkably phlegmatic about it. 'I don’t really know what to say,’ he said. 'If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, there will be many more opportunities, there are opportunities still there. There are still 16 races and you have to look at that. The glass, rather than it being half-full is 10% full. And there is still the rest of that to fill up.’"
