Lewis Hamilton heads into the weekend a point behind Rosberg in the championship and determined to take the lead for the first time this season on one of his favourite tracks.

Hamilton has won at the Hungaroring four times since his career started in 2007, but Mercedes are yet to win here since the start of the hybrid engine era in 2014.

Standard bit of pre-session kickabout for Nico Rosberg.

The rest of the drivers are also going through their usual routines, some getting strapped in and ready to go.

The Red Bull has a lot of usable aerodynamic downforce - just what you need in Hungary - and two drivers in Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen who are pushing like hell and have a point to prove.

However, there is a big unknown this weekend, which is the Hungaroring has been resurfaced since last year.

It used to be a slippery, dusty track with a unique, abrasive, low-grip asphalt. But the new surface is apparently the very high bitumen, dark-surfaced asphalt used in Austria and Brazil.

If it is hot as usual, that will exacerbate the problems of keeping tyre temperatures under control - and Red Bull have struggled with that at a couple of races recently.

Kimi Raikkonen is a popular presence in Hungary, with hundreds of fans chanting "Kimi for President" as he signed a few autographs.

    I could get behind that.

BBC Radio 5 live's Jennie Gow spoke to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff after confirmation of Nico Rosberg's contract.

Jennie asked if he had been tempted by another drivers, and Wolff said: “I am in for long-term stability especially with the regulations change. I am a faithful person and if it functions well with your wife you need to stay with your wife.”

The deal keeps Rosberg at the team until 2018, which is when Lewis Hamilton's contract also expires.

Wolff added: "It means they will try to out-perform each other and you have to think to the younger generation. For me, there is more opportunity than risk in having both run out at the same time.”

Hello and welcome back! Joining us for the first time today? Then simply welcome!

Lewis Hamilton was fastest in first practice at Hungaroring this morning, finishing 0.237 seconds quicker than Nico Rosberg and 1.644secs ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

Kimi Raikkonen was fourth quickest in the other Ferrari, with the Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen fourth and fifth respectively.

The Red Bulls were 1.59s slower than the Mercedes, but did not show their true pace, having opted not to use the faster supersoft tyres in the morning session.

The result from Hungarian Grand Prix first practice could easily have been a copy and paste from a session at pretty much any other race this season. Mercedes were dominant once again, and seemingly a mile apart from the rest of the field.

Red Bull, though, are yet to show their hand. Could they be the one to push the Silver Arrows this weekend?

Right, time to take our usual break between sessions and grab a bite to eat. We'll be back for second practice at 12:30 BST, so join us then. Cheerio!

No surprises as to which team is at the top of the order, with the Mercedes 1.6s clear of the Ferraris. Ominous, but Red Bull keep things interesting for FP2 having decided not to show their hand in this session. Neither Daniel Ricciardo or Max Verstappen did a lap on the supersofts.

Right. enough about chasing Pokemons - especially after Jack Nicholls' awful joke on t'radio - there's two minutes left of first practice and it is looking like Lewis Hamilton will finish the session quickest. The top four times have all been set on the super softs, with Red Bull keeping the covers on their super softs for now.
