Several times on the board now, with Kimi Raikkonen fastest having done a 1:46.813 on the ultra softs.

Max Verstappen overcame his giant lizard run-in by clocking a 1:47.038 on the softs to go second quickest, two tenths down on Raikkonen.

Yep, just seen said lizard and I can confirm it is massive.

"Face to face with Godzilla mate," Max Verstappen's race engineer says to the teenager.

Few smiles in garages up and down the pits. Not on the face of Ron Dennis, though. Game face very much on.

"It was about a metre long from nose to tail. It reminds me of the time that Niki Lauda driving for McLaren in the early 1980s. He noticed something during qualifying that he kept kicking by his feet, he thought one of the mechanics had left something but it was only when he got back after qualifying he noticed it was a lizard he was kicking."

Never mind debris, there is something altogether more frightening on the track at the moment!

"Woah," says Max Verstappen. "There is a giant lizard on the track!"

Pascal Wehrlein has struck the wall, spinning his Manor into the barrier and taking off part of his rear wing. He gets back on his way, but a fair sized chunk of carbon fibre flutters off and onto the track and the red flag is waved.

All the pre-race focus was on Red Bull as the potential thorn in Mercedes’ side in Singapore, but on Friday in the second session it was Ferrari who got closest - and not the driver you would expect.

Kimi Raikkonen has only out-qualified a team-mate once in Singapore and that was Ferrari substitute Giancarlo Fisichella in 2009, while Sebastian Vettel has won at Marina Bay four times.

Yet it was Raikkonen who led the way on Friday with second fastest time, a chunky 0.7secs ahead of the four-time champion. “The second practice was good,” said Raikkonen, who since the summer has looked much more like the driver he used to be.

“Everything worked and the car was handling pretty well. Here in Singapore, if you get the car right, it makes such a big difference.” Vettel admitted to “struggling a little bit with the car balance” in the second session, and therefore not really finding the rhythm” but insisted that “in general it has been a good day”.

Hopes are high at Ferrari for a strong weekend.

After missing a fair chunk of second practice, Lewis Hamilton is out on the track now. He's got super softs on his Mercedes, as has his team-mate Nico Rosberg.

  14. Mercedes' focus on qualifyingpublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 17 September 2016

Mercedes technical executive Paddy Lowe says qualifying preparation will be their main focus in this session.

With six of the eight previous Singapore GPs having been won from pole, get that place at the front of the pack is particularly important.

Lowe said: "We lost some data on the super-soft tyre long run yesterday because of Lewis’ issue. Today we are focusing on qualifying. (Pole position) is almost as important (as in Monaco). Monaco is always a one-stop race and your position into Turn One is a deciding factor. Here it is a multi-stop race and there are safety cars - there has never not been one - so you don’t necessarily win the race if you get into Turn One in front.

"We feel happier than this time last year but that just means we have got into the point where the car seems to be working properly but then we have very close competition with Red Bull and Ferrari. This is a circuit that is always going to be very tight for us with the philosophy we adopt. It should be a very close qualifying session.

Red Bull arrived in Singapore expecting their best race since Monaco and they did not disappoint.

One-two in the first session became three-four behind Nico Rosberg and Kimi Raikkonen but hopes were still high.

“I felt good out there, just looking for a bit more from the car,” Daniel Ricciardo said.

“I have confidence we will find it and we will be strong. It’s close. To find a few tenths on this circuit is quite easy there are so many corners. We knew they [Mercedes] wouldn't have a massive gap here this weekend. We know if we get it right we can be very close in qualifying.”
