So Sebastian Vettel ends the day quickest with Lewis Hamilton all the way down in eighth. A one-off? Or problems afoot at Mercedes for this weekend? Luckily for them they have an extra day to get to the bottom of it.

We're back on Saturday for final practice at 09:30 BST. See you then.

So why were Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas so low down on the timing sheet? Toto Wolff is on Sky Sports now saying they just got their set up wrong for the day.

"We are lacking data so now it is about sticking heads together and staying calm," he says.

Fernando Alonso has got tongues wagging all across America.

Former Red Bull chief mechanic Kenny Handkammer was one of the most successful engineers in F1 racing after being part of 13 world championship title wins. He now works for Tesla and resides in California.

"The hype it has got is huge, it is outstanding," he says. "Everyone is talking about it. I take my son to play football at the weekend and all the dads are saying: 'Did you see Fernando? He has got up to speed really quickly'.

"I am getting that just from people I know without the rest of the media attention."

Ferrari have genuine pace. I do suspect that Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will turn it up when they need to. FP3 will be a better indicator of what we can expect in qualifying.

It's difficult to read but what we can say is that Vettel's first lap on the ultra-soft was about two tenths quicker than Hamilton. Bottas' first lap on the ultra-soft was about the same as Vettel's so not a massive concern for Mercedes.

Hmm. It's a short stint out on the track for Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. A couple of laps and they are back in. Not sure what their programme is today.
