To say that Stoffel Vandoorne has not had the best of preparations for his debut Formula 1 season would be something of an understatement. Great things are expected of the Belgian, who many regard as a potential future superstar. But, like everyone else at McLaren, his pre-season has been a whirlwind of reliability problems. Not exactly the best way to get ready for a year in which he will be measured against, of all people, Fernando Alonso.

But Vandoorne, who suffered a series of stoppages in his last day in the car on Thursday and managed only 48 laps, said he was not too worried. “

Obviously there are still some issues going on which stopped us doing more laps this winter,” he said after getting out of the car on Thursday. “It was my final day before Melbourne so I would have liked to have some more laps but that is normal. In any case, I feel 100% ready for Melbourne and I feel confident in the car.”

This is a big day for McLaren.

After their problems so far in testing - coupled with Fernando Alonso's fiery comments about their Honda engine - they need to show some sort of improvement today.

They've only really been out in short bursts so, assuming all goes well, expect them to get down to race runs today.

Alonso is one of the first drivers out on the track this morning.

Sebastian Vettel really set tongues wagging on Thursday with his fastest lap of the pre-season so far - a mark he set while apparently backing off on the straight to disguise his true pace.

Everyone was impressed - even Lewis Hamilton, who was 0.328secs slower on the day. "They are very close, if not faster,” Hamilton said.

“Whatever the case, I can't wait to go out and compete. Just a couple more weeks to go.” Yes, it’s testing, with all the usual caveats, including the knowledge that drivers are more than capable of engaging in a bit of kidology.

But this Ferrari pace is beginning to look real.

    Hello!

Welcome along to our coverage of the eighth and final day of pre-season testing in Barcelona.

This is it. In two weeks the F1 circus will be in Australia for the opening race of the season. Today is the final chance for teams to iron out a few issues or, perhaps, flex those muscles and get their rivals worrying.

Both Ferrari and Mercedes have looked strong during the course of testing, but you can't help but feel that one - if not both - of these teams is sandbagging.

So is one of them hiding their true pace? Maybe today will reveal a little more...

Lewis Hamilton says Ferrari are the fastest.

Sebastian Vettel says Mercedes are the fastest.

One of these statements can't be true.

Anyone else think there's a fair few of these knocking around these two teams' garages?
