  1. Hamilton and Vettel 'hate each other'published at 11:54 British Summer Time 9 July 2017

Far from being a temporary bromance breakdown, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner thinks Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel "hate each other".

"You can’t believe that press conference," Horner said in the Mail on Sunday,, external referring to last week's press conference when the pair claimed the Baku incident was behind them. "It was just a PR show to keep the FIA happy. I’m sure they were both under strict instructions.

"At this point in time they hate each other because they are in each other’s way of achieving their goal. But it would be far better to be upfront about it instead of hiding behind PR speak. It would be more entertaining for the fans. There needs to be rivalry."

Daniel Ricciardo has out-qualified Max Verstappen for the first time in five races in Austria, two days after He admitted the Dutchman had simply been doing a better job. It’s now five-four to the Dutchman over the season. And the margins are close - this time it was 0.007secs. Ricciardo said he felt a quicker lap time was in the car, but admitted that was the case for everyone - including Kimi Raikkonen, who was 0.017secs in front.

Verstappen simply over-drove. He admitted to struggling in Turn Three (effectively the second corner, the uphill hairpin), before finally getting it sorted out. Then he made a mistake in Turn One.

Then on his final run, he was quicker in the first two corners before encountering the yellows for Romain Grosjean’s stranded Haas. That lost him time, which he said he had clawed back through Turns Four, Five and Six so his lap-time read-out delta was back to zero “but then in Turn Seven I got on the power too early and lost the rear”.

That battle is going to run and run.

Speaking of Max, he's got his lucky lederhosen on once again for the drivers' parade.

Last year in Austria he wore a race suit with the fetching breeches designed into them and he went on to finish second in the race, having started down in ninth.

Verstappen did that on a one-stop strategy, something Lewis Hamilton looks set to replicate today as he starts on super-soft tyres. Those around him are on ultra-softs.

Do we now add Austria to the list of races where a below-par performance from Lewis Hamilton harmed his title chances? He was never going to start higher than sixth because of his gearbox penalty. But by qualifying third and starting eighth he has made his job that bit harder - especially with Sebastian Vettel starting on the front row.

Hamilton spent some time after qualifying dodging questions about his failure to convert fastest times in all practice sessions and the first two qualifying sessions into the quickest time when it mattered. But in the end he admitted: “I didn't deliver. I have been quick all weekend and in Q3 I didn't do the time I could have done and when you're disappointed in yourself it is a large pill to swallow. But we move on and I will.”

    Hello!

Welcome along to our coverage of the Austrian Grand Prix - round nine of the 2017 Formula 1 season.

For us observers, the title battle is ticking along nicely, a bit of needle between the main protagonists only enhances it, but for Lewis Hamilton today is serious business.

He's 14 points behind Sebastian Vettel in the drivers' championship and can ill afford to drop further behind the German. To close the gap, he's going to have to do it the hard way. He lines up eighth on the grid while Vettel is up in second.

  9. The bromance is over?published at 11:29 British Summer Time 9 July 2017
