What Silverstone has become this year - to those of you who are technically minded - is the cars are three seconds a lap faster than last year as the corners have been straightened out and become a more power sensitive track. That hurts Red Bull and helps the Mercedes and Ferrari cars.
So, first hot laps done.
The order is 1 Hamilton, 2 Vettel, 3 Bottas, 4 Raikkonen, 5 Verstappen, 6 Hulkenberg, 7 Perez, 8 Ocon, 9 Grosjean, 10 Vandoorne
Max Verstappen - Red Bull's sole driver in this session - completes his first hot lap and slots into fifth place, over a second slower than Hamilton.
P2 for Vettel - he goes two tenths slower than Hamilton's provisional pole time.
A 1:27.580 for Bottas is the first time on the board, but Hamilton blasts through seconds later and goes quicker by three tenths of a second.
Perez and Ocon in the Force Indias then set their times - two seconds off the pace of the Mercedes. Ouch.
Bottas and Hamilton are on track and will be setting the benchmark times any moment....

This is the moment the drivers love. These are the fastest laps we are going to see at Silverstone this weekend and the drivers love it as much as we do.
A reminder of your protagonists in this session:
Hamilton, Bottas, Vettel, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg, Verstappen, Ocon, Perez, Grosjean, Vandoorne
Bottas will take a five-place grid penalty, don't forget, so pole is likely to come down to a straight fight between Hamilton and Vettel.
The top-10 shootout is under way.

The standout from that session for me was Stoffel Vandoorne, who went 10th fastest. He was quicker than McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso - the first time this year that has happened. It's a great confidence boost for Vandoorne and to put one over on Alonso will be good for his end-of-year CV.

It has taken a while but I've bumped into a colourful group of characters at Silverstone. These chaps are apparently dressed up as dead popstars. Got to be a stag do?
"No we just fancied it," said one of their group.
"What did you think of Alonso's Q1 lap," I asked.
"What did he do?" was the response.
It is fair to say the beers were flowing.
