  9. What strategy to expect?published at 12:54 British Summer Time 30 July 2017

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer at Hungaroring

Strategy seems more open than in the last few races. Pirelli is projecting that a one-stop and a two-stop are similar in time, with the problem of the two-stop being getting caught in traffic.

McLaren’s Fernando Alonso said there was “not much to play with” on strategy and that tyre degradation was low. But Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo said: “It is going to be tough with the heat. We are ready for anything but we are going to have to manage the tyres. It will very, very unlikely be a one-stop race.”

A key factor could be that Ferrari and Red Bull both have two fresh sets of tyre for the race - Ferrari two sets of soft tyres, Red Bull one of softs and one of super-softs. Mercedes only have one new set - of softs.

After this race it's F1's summer holiday - during the summer break, the whole sport completely shuts down for two weeks.

These teams are not even allowed to look at emails. That's how seriously they have to take it.

One thing that will be very telling is Paul di Resta's fitness - the touring cars he drives are nowhere near as demanding as this 2017 car.

It will be interesting to see how he does in that department.

And, of course, we had Jenson Button this very year making a fleeting return to F1.

Everyone hoped it would be a fairytale one. Sadly it wasn't as he crashed into Pascal Wehrlein.

He did threaten to pee in Fernando Alonso's seat though, so it was certainly entertaining.

  18. Jean-Louis Schlesser punts Senna offpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 30 July 2017

    Most entertaining F1 cameos

Jean-Louis Schlesser deputised for Nigel Mansell at the 1988 Italian Grand Prix... and promptly crashed his Williams into Ayrton Senna - who was right in the middle of one of the most dominant title wins in the sport's history.

Strangely, that appearance at Monza was Schlesser's one and only start in Formula 1.

Nico Hulkenberg confirmed the improved form Renault showed at Silverstone two weeks ago with seventh in qualifying here, and best of the rest, the car improved significantly by a new floor introduced in Silverstone and a new front wing here. He starts 12th as a result of a grid penalty for a gearbox change.

“I’m very happy about the performance of the car,” Hulkenberg said. “In fact it’s been really good all weekend long. We’ve found a very good harmony and balance and it was a pleasure to exploit this in qualifying. Of course, the gearbox penalty is far from ideal, but it happens sometimes; there was no option other than changing it. The long runs looked quite promising yesterday so there’s good potential for the race, we have a strong car so we should recover well.”

The penalty promotes team-mate Jolyon Palmer from 11th in qualifying to 10th on the grid. That’s the good news. The bad news is the Englishman was still struggling for pace - 0.8secs off Hulkenberg in Q2 - after a terrible Friday in which he crashed twice. Not the best weekend for him with Robert Kubica testing the car on Wednesday and his future in doubt.
