The current crop of drivers have been speaking about their favourite Michael Schumacher memories.

Sebastian Vettel said on Saturday: "Well it's not fair to pick one moment. I know him for a very very long time. From the age of six, seven, I met him for the first time he was handing over the trophies to the kids at the go-kart tracks in Kerpen, his home track, not far away from here. It was massive. We were more than a hundred kids and he took the time to shake all of our hands, hand over the trophies so as a child I think that was indescribable. Obviously he was my hero. I had posters everywhere in my room, he was pretty much the only guy I followed when I was young.

"A big inspiration and I think we had a lot of good moments, fun moments. As a child it's different, you're just starstruck in a way, he's my hero, what do I say? I don't know. Later on I got to know him and really get along. He's a great guy, good fun and I think the admiration for his skills is the same as day one, we shared a lot of good moments at the Race of Champions together. You can argue about the format and so on, but you still have to drive different cars, adapt and the way he drives a go-kart is, I don't know, it's just so different to anybody else I have ever seen. I don't know how I look from the outside but I know I don't look like that. Many moments. Sober and not sober, so it's hard to pick one."

What a moment for him, and for Formula 1 fans, to see Mick driving his dad's car.

It’s been obvious for some time that Fernando Alonso is too quick for his car, in a metaphorical sense, as McLaren-Honda struggle and one of the all-time greats languishes in the midfield. On Saturday, one could say that was literally the case. The Spaniard was denied a place in the top 10 shoot-out when the Honda engine’s hybrid system failed to deploy after Pouhon. It turns out that this was caused by him taking the fast double left-hander flat for the first time. The Honda is programmed to recognise where it is on the track by a number of parameters, one of which is throttle input. But as Alonso had not lifted, it did not recognise that he had done a corner, so did not deploy, leading to an anguished scream of “no power” on the radio.

Once out of the car, though, he was more sanguine, pleased with how the team’s strategy of having the drivers tow each other to try to compensate for the Honda’s lack of power worked out. “It was a very good day for us,” Alonso said, “a very positive Saturday. The performance we saw was a little bit unexpected for us, who competitive we were, especially in Q1 and Q2 we were 1.5-1.7secs from first position. Happy with the balance, happy with the car and the team as we planned qualifying so a very positive day. we missed the Q3 spot because we had an issue with the deployment of the engine and part from that the day was perfect. And if you start P11 with a new tyres or free choice it is preferred than start 10th with mandatory tyres.”

Orange t-shirts and orange flares in the stands at Spa. What an atmosphere.

The extra support helped Max Verstappen to secure a place on the front row in qualifying for the race last year, although the race itself didn't go so well. He finished 11th after an early incident with the Ferraris.

  10. Paying the penaltypublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 27 August 2017

There's a fair few changes to the grid after six drivers picked up grid penalties for today's race.

Stoffel Vandoorne starts right at the back as a result of engine penalties resulting in a drop of 65 places.

Daniil KVyat has a 20-place penalty to take after requiring an engine, turbo and MGU-H change before qualifying.

Felipe Massa drops five places after ignoring yellow flags in FP3 while Sauber pair Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein were also hit with a five-place penalty for unscheduled gear box changes. Jolyon Palmer also drops five places after a gearbox change.

There was no doubting the quality of the lap with which Lewis Hamilton took his 68th pole, but the one that netted Sebastian Vettel second was arguably at least as good.

The Ferrari driver was a second adrift of Hamilton in second qualifying but he closed that to 0.5secs on the first runs of Q1, and although Hamilton then improved again by nearly 0.4secs on his final run, Vettel pulled out even more, and got the gap down to 0.2secs, splitting the Mercedes and beating Valtteri Bottas by 0.5secs.

“The last lap the car was a little bit more alive, immediately I could feel it turning into Turn One,” he said. “And then I have to also admit that I was a bit lucky with Kimi (Raikkonen). He had to abort his lap but he gave me a very, very nice tow, which I think made it a bit more comfortable with Valtteri. Obviously it’s very important.” Vettel reckoned the tow had won him “about 0.2secs”. So the rest of the time came from the driver. Stunning.

Sebastian Vettel will line up alongside Lewis Hamilton at the front of the grid after just about failing to get the better of the Briton in qualifying. It's a position he is feeling very comfortable with.

"Whoever has the speed will win," says Vettel. "We need to confirm it this afternoon but so far we have it [the race pace]."

Another Spa-Schumacher statistic - his 300th race in Formula 1 was in Belgium. Sebastian Vettel marked it by painting a picture for his compatriot.

There's been a bit of delay in Mick Schumacher doing his demonstration laps because the circuit needed a bit of cleaning up after a hefty crash in the Porsche Supercup earlier this morning.

The traffic into the circuit this morning was horrendous - like Silverstone in the bad old days, as a number of experienced hands in the paddock pointed out. Something like 100,000 people are expected, many of them dressed in orange supporting Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

At this stage, it does not look like the weather is going to do him the favour he needs to challenge for the win, but Verstappen is pleased with how his weekend is going so far. He has comfortably had the legs of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo all weekend and ended up out-qualifying him by half a second - it’s now eight-four in the Dutchman’s favour this season as he establishes himself as the fastest driver in that team.

The key for Verstappen will be avoiding the sort of silly early accident he had in Hungary - and here last year, for that matter.

Trickycyclist: Every era has its heros, who battle it out using the technology of the day. We'll never be able to put Senna, Schumacher, Prost, Clark, Moss, Fangio (and many others) on the track in identical cars, so such comparisons are daft. Hamilton is the hero of our age. In 10 years time it will be someone else and people will be saying he/she isn't as good as Hamilton was.
