Lewis Hamilton passed title rival Sebastian Vettel to take a dominant victory in the United States Grand Prix but will have to wait at least one more race to win his fourth world championship.

The Mercedes driver is 66 points clear of Vettel, who finished second, with only 75 still available in the remaining three races.

It means Hamilton is almost certain to clinch the title at the Mexican Grand Prix next weekend.

Vettel has to make up 17 points on Hamilton in Mexico City to take the fight to the next race in Brazil - which is the equivalent of the German winning the race with Hamilton finishing sixth or lower.

Given Hamilton's rich run of form of five wins and a second place in the last six races, that seems very unlikely, unless the Mercedes has a technical failure, which the Briton's car has not had all season in a race.

Hamilton's drivers' title will make a fourth consecutive championship double for Mercedes, who clinched the constructors' title on Sunday in Austin.

Lewis Hamilton speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "There have been races when they (Ferrari) were quickest and have not done a good enough job but I really want to say big congratulations to the team back at factory.

"It has been a big push come into another era of car and keep up with Ferrari. I am looking forward to this battle for years to come."

Asked how it will feel to become F1's most successful British driver if he wins a fourth world title: "That will be very cool. Growing up I was very proud to be among the great British drivers. It is such a dream.

"Growing up seeing the greats Sir Stirling [Moss] Damon [Hill] James [Hunt] and Jim [Clark], to be up there, it doesn't feel real."

So Lewis Hamilton only needs to finish fifth in the Mexican Grand Prix next week to become the world champion for a fourth time.

Ferrari fans will not be too happy to hear that in 17 races this season, Hamilton has only finished out of the top five on one occasion - when he came seventh in Monaco.

Just to be clear, Verstappen did not get his penalty for running wide at Turn 19, he got it for cutting the inside at Turn 17.

We've seen a lot of Usain Bolt all over the place today and it seems like the big man has enjoyed himself in Austin.

Mercedes are constructors champions for a fourth time. Second, third and fourth looks all sewn up as well for Ferrari, Red Bull and Force India respectively.

But there promises to be a fascinating battle for positions between Williams, Toro Rosso, Renault, Haas and McLaren.

Max Verstappen is extremely unhappy at the five-second penalty for going off the track that demoted him to fourth.

He tells Sky Sports: "Everyone is running wide, turn nine, turn 19, it was the same for Bottas, he went wide and gained an advantage.

"It is not good for the sport and they have to be clear on the rules what is allowed. The engine penalty is what it is, we had a great race but with those stupid decisions you kill the sport. I hope the fans do not like this decision and next year they do not come."

Jukebox Jack: That podium was won fair and square by Verstappen. Disgusting from F1 to dock five seconds for it, many other “cutters” went unpunished!

Tim Brown: Shame for Max but the right call, if Vettel had done that to Hamilton to win the race we'd all be calling foul.

Speaking to Sky Sports about Lewis Hamilton's title hopes, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said: "We can see the fat lady back stage preparing."

On to Mexico goes the title race. There are now only 75 points to pick up for one individual driver this season, with Lewis Hamilton holding a 66-point lead.

So Hamilton only needs to finish fifth in Mexico to win the title.

He's almost there.

Third placed Kimi Raikkonen says: "Obviously I was disappointed just after the race when I finished fourth but there was some issue with Max (Verstappen).

"It was a great race. My car was very good all the way. I just had to fuel save a bit at the end."
