Second-placed Sebastian Vettel said: "At the start it was looking good, we got past Lewis, but we had to realise we couldn't go at his pace.

"We were then in no-man's land and were not quite sure (what to do). We decided to pit again, with a fresh set of tyres and it was a bit more exciting but overall it was not the result we needed.

"They were quicker than us and we have to admit that. It was not down to strategy you (Usain Bolt) should know, whoever is fastest normally has the best chance of winning."

Race winner Lewis Hamilton says: "I feel amazing. Look at this crowd. These guys have been amazing. Since 2012 the crowd has been growing year on year. I think this track is now my favourite track.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner is absolutely furious about Max Verstappen's five-second penalty that drops the Dutchman down from third to fourth: "They have been driving off track all weekend, Max made a fair move," says Horner.

"It is an appalling decision. They have robbed all of the fans here. It was a great grand prix and they have screwed it up."

So there is one Mercedes man - Lewis Hamilton - and both Ferrari drivers on the podium as God Save the Queen plays out before the German national anthem for the winning constructors.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff: "I am so happy and so proud of what the team have achieved. So much effort has been put in 24-7 it couldn't feel any better right now.

"At the end the best car wins. It is about pace and reliability and that made us win the constructors championship.

"It is not done yet (drivers' championship) we need to seal it in Mexico."

Verstappen was third, but wait, just wait. He has just been given a five-second time penalty for cutting the track and gaining an advantage. That will drop him back down to fourth, with Kimi Raikkonen back up to third.

He doesn't know it yet and is chatting casually with Sebastian Vettel. Expect an unhappy Dutchman any time soon.
