Valtteri Bottas headed team-mate Lewis Hamilton to a Mercedes one-two in first practice at the Mexican Grand Prix.

The Finn, who has struggled in recent races, was 0.466 seconds quicker than Hamilton, who is aiming to clinch his fourth world title on Sunday.

Hamilton needs only to finish fifth regardless of where Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel is to become world champion.

Vettel was fifth behind the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.

I would say we've learnt that it could be very, very close. The gap is 7/10ths between first and Vettel in fifth.

  14. Bottas fastestpublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 27 October 2017
    Breaking

Lewis Hamilton was fastest in all three practice sessions, all three sections of qualifying and won the race in the United States.

But he is not fastest today. That honour goes to his team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton second, then come the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, followed by the Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.

Sergio Perez entertains the home fans by coming 'best of the rest' in seventh.

Williams' Lance Stroll is not too happy. In the last few laps we have heard him moaning about someone in front of him, the fuel and the pace of the car. He is 12th.

Not good news either for Carlos Sainz in his Renault. He locks up his tyres and slides on to the grass.

  17. Five leftpublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

Five minutes to go. Valtteri Bottas is showing what he is made of so far today and it is well needed for the Finn after coming fifth in Malaysia, fourth in Japan and fifth again last week in the United States.

Top 10: Bottas, Hamilton, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Vettel, Raikkonen, Perez, Alonso, Massa, Hulkenberg.

  18. Speed trappublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

Haas' Kevin Magnussen is doing great on the speed trap, but not so great overall as he is 18th fastest out of 20.

Only Alfonso Celis, who pranged the Force India earlier and is taking no further part in this session, and Stoffel Vandoorne, not seen so far because of a dodgy engine, are lower in the standings.

  19. Postpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

Sergio Perez has just moved quicker than Fernando Alonso. Up to seventh for the Mexican.

  20. How they standpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

The two Mercedes (Bottas and Hamilton) still lead the way, then the two Red Bulls now (Verstappen and Ricciardo) and then the two Ferraris (Vettel and Raikkonen).

Fernando Alonso is best of the rest, seventh quickest in his McLaren.
