BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

We are having a good chat on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra about the potential for two-day Grand Prix weekends.

Agricola: Formula 1 fans want to see F1 cars on the track for three days, not two; they pay a lot of money for the privilege.

Matthew Rickard: Totally agree with Mark Gallagher's comment about Sunday morning warm-ups. Was great to have 2 chances to see the F1 cars in action!

Chris: Agree with @TomClarksonF1, external that 2 day F1 would mix grid with less FP. No way teams would let the drivers race karts on Friday though!

  2. Two-day Grand Prix weekends?published at 17:12 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

It's about allowing the circuits to break even. This weekend is a tourist advert for Mexico funded by the government. Other circuits that don't have that funding need four days of action, with Thursday being a support day with a festival, to make it work.

For a two-day meeting to work they would have to cut costs or fees for the circuits and I can't see that happening.

I've always thought Fridays are a bit of a waste of time - all it does is allow the drivers to ready their car for the weekend when what you want is uncertainty in Formula 1.

Who is your favourite Formula 1 driver?

Ross McIntyre: Rubens Barrichello for me, on his day was quicker than Schumacher an absolute gentleman throughout his entire career and liked by all.

Patrick McLaughlin: Has to be @alo_oficial, external he beat Schumacher and dragged that 2012 Ferrari to places it didn't belong.

    Good news.

The track has been cleared and we are good to go again. Sebastian Vettel, third fastest so far, takes the opportunity to get back out there with just over 20 minutes of the session to go.

Can he go faster than the Mercedes pair of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton?

Chris: I’d love to know how the money Celis paid for this FP1 run compares to the damage-repair-bill for his bump!

There is meant to be another 26 minutes of this session, but this Force India recovery is going to take up a bit of time. Luckily, no damage was done to Celis, apart from to his pride.

    Jack Nicholls
Radio 5 live sports extra Formula 1 commentator

It's a slippery race track because it's relatively new. Barcelona is an old track where it's very abrasive but it's very smooth here.

  10. Red flagpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

And out comes the red flag as the stewards try to get the Force India off the track.

Just before the red flag is seen, Kimi Raikkonen spun in his Ferrari, but luckily for him, unlike Celis, there was no wall to run into.

  11. Celis into barrierpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

    "I crashed."

    "Can you drive it?"

"No, there is too much damage."

Alfonso Celis was hoping to show what he is capable of. It has not exactly gone to plan. He comes into a corner with too much pace, he spins, clips the barrier and does some damage to the Force India car. The car of Esteban Ocon.

Who is your favourite Formula 1 driver?

Phil Slocombe: Lewis; the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be. Lewis' 'winners never quit' attitude makes him a winner.

Stuart Dugdill: All time John Surtees. Fast in car and bike. Recently Hamilton - maturing nicely.

David Milner: Should be Senna but it was Mansell as a Brit. Then Coulthard (only driver I've actually met), now Hamilton. Overall, Eddie Cheever.

Another engine change for Vandoorne. They don't foresee any further penalties (will use spare engine) on top of 20.

  15. Where's Vandoorne?published at 16:53 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

Remember when we heard from McLaren boss Zak Brown about 10 minutes ago saying it is going to be "a frustrating weekend"?

Well, Stoffel Vandoorne is the only man to not set a time so far after 50 minutes of this session. The problem? Well, you could probably guess. Engine.

  16. Bottas goes fastestpublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

Valtteri Bottas was the only driver on the track and he uses that free track well by jumping a second quicker than Sebastian Vettel on the ultra-soft.

Bottas' time of 1:17.824 is now the mark the others want to beat.
