Glorious Iberian skies greet the first European race of this compelling Formula 1 season. Lace-delicate seedpods float in the spring air, white silhouetted against azur. Trees sway in the morning breeze. The Pyrenees, just visible through the haze, to the north.

The Spanish Grand Prix at the demanding Circuit de Catalunya, twisting and turning up the side of the one of the valleys that give the name to this region to the north of Barcelona, is a fixture on the Formula 1 calendar.

With all the testing done here, the track is almost a second home to everyone in F1. It’s not so appealing in February, but by early May it’s a most enjoyable place to be.

After a fascinating first four races of the season, Formula 1 is in Europe for the first time this year with Lewis Hamilton having just nudged ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the title race.

It should be another thrilling weekend on the track, boosted by the sight of Robert Kubica behind the wheel of the Williams as he steps in for Sergey Sirotkin this morning.

... but also significant about that day was the driver who finished fifth. It was Robert Kubica and that was the last time he participated in a grand prix weekend.

    But today, he is back.
