Verstappen fastest in both practice sessions, Sainz & Vandoorne hit the wall

Red Bull's Max Verstappen headed Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen in second practice at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Verstappen's team-mate Daniel Ricciardo leapt up to third place late on after electrical problems delayed him. But Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes appeared to be quickest, fourth and 0.579 seconds off the pace on a slower tyre.
The session was characterised by teams juggling tyres to work out their best strategy for qualifying and race with the awkward hyper-soft rubber.
The hyper-soft is much faster over one lap than the ultra-soft, the medium of three compounds this weekend, but it degrades much faster than other two, and at least some of the top three teams are likely to try to avoid starting the race on it.

The favourite has to be Lewis Hamilton still. We're yet to see him on the hypersoft tyres. He's half-a-second off the pace, we think the hypersofts are worth about 0.7 seconds.
So it's close between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, and potentially Kimi Raikkonen as well, who is just over 0.1 secs behind Verstappen. Again, that's all three teams in the mix.
It's been a wretched day for Sebastian Vettel, but I'm not going to discount him either. So many times, Ferrari have had a tough Friday and then pulled it all together on a Saturday.

Yesterday he was threatening to headbutt people, today he hit the critics where it hurts - with his performances on the track.

Amit Mandalia: The midfield is looking close again, one second covering Grosjean in sixth and Gasly in 17th.
Daniel Ricciardo, after some extensive work on his Red Bull, moves up to 14th and that means the two Williams cars are the two slowest.
In session one they were 17th and 18th, but 19th was Formula 2 Championship driver Nicholas Latifi and Nico Hulkenberg did not set a time because of a gear issue.
So, in effect, Williams are the two slowest in both sessions. Another miserable weekend coming their way.

I've just been doing all the maths and talking to Pirelli. Mercedes only brought five sets of the hypersoft tyres with them this weekend. They've got four sets to get themselves through qualifying, because one set would be for Q3.
So they have two runs for each qualifying session if they want to go out on the hypers, which is probably why they're not touching them at the moment - because if they do, they don't have enough of the new hypers to do two runs each. That's a problem for them.
The difference between the hypersoft and the ultrasoft at the moment is 1.1 seconds. It would be a huge gamble if Mercedes didn't run a hyper in Q2. I can't see it happening. I can't see that they'd get through or be willing to take that gamble.
A good day so for Max Verstappen. Fastest in session one and, with just over 15 minutes left, fastest in session two.
Virtual safety car gone, and we have just over 25 minutes of the session to go.
Daniel Ricciardo is soon to be allowed back on the track after some frantic work from his team. Have they done enough to ensure no grid penalties come his way? There will be some fingers crossed in the Red Bull garage for the rest of this session.
