"Hamilton was struggling throughout qualifying, despite looking strong through most of the weekend, but he surely will not have expected to end up down in fourth on a circuit where he has taken six wins and six poles in 10 events, nor to be beaten by a team-mate for only the second time in his career here."

Couldn't agree more, Andy - Canada rarely disappoints, and it certainly hasn't so far.

Quite a lot of post-race reaction to take in there. The most interesting interview was that of Lewis Hamilton, who looked and sounded incredibly hacked off. Missing out on a front row start - especially when team-mate Valtteri Bottas got one - has done nothing for his mood.

McLaren's Fernando Alonso, who qualified 14th, speaking to Sky Sports: "We knew this could be a difficult circuit for us. We were uncompetitive today. We fell in P3 and then it showed more in qualifying.

"It's difficult to explain. The performance didn't happen. We try to analyse as much as we can. We know our weakness and we know we have to improve. We are disappointed today but the race is tomorrow, and we have to attack."

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, who qualified fourth, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was just a difficult session. The laps weren't great laps. Our race pace was good yesterday. Our single lap was good too, but today, it just didn't come together. Ferrari did a better job today and that's just the way it is."

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, who qualified fifth, speaking to Sky Sports: "I got a lot of understeer into Turn Two on that last lap. I had no choice but to try to get off it as quickly as I could, but couldn't make it.

It's a bit tricky to say how starting on the ultrasofts tomorrow will affect things. We don't really know. The car's been working well, so we will see."

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, who qualified sixth, speaking to Sky Sports: "In the end, sixth is not that satisfying on paper, but I feel in qualifying we made a lot of progress. We struggled for rhythm yesterday and even this morning. I felt we were always one step back.

"I felt the laps I did were worth more than sixth place, but in the end, they weren't. With what we had, I feel I did a not bad job.

"We've opted to start on hypersofts tomorrow because we feel we can manage it a bit better. We always thought pole would be a long shot. We felt we would have cars to overtake and felt hypers would give us a chance to do that."

The big six have come out on top - we could have predicted that. But who would have thought that Lewis Hamilton, the king of Montreal, would only be fourth? We expected a bit more from Mercedes today, given how well they did in practice yesterday without using the hypersoft tyres. What we didn't know was that they weren't quite where they wanted to be on hypersofts.

Max Verstappen has proved - at least up to this point - that he can drive with discipline, without losing the flair that he showed on that thrilling final qualifying lap to snatch third. And Ferrari, after a ropey Friday, pulled it out of the bag for Sebastian Vettel on the Saturday - as they have done so often. So who knows what lies in store for Sunday?

Max Verstappen, who qualified third: "I am very happy with this weekend so far. The car has been working really well, we are just missing top speed but to be third is great and I think we can do a good job."

Valtteri Bottas, who qualified second: "It was close. It is always annoying when it is so close but anyway - front row and let's see tomorrow."

Sebastian Vettel: "Yesterday we were a bit in trouble, I was not really happy with the car and I could not get the rhythm. Today was switched on and what a day, the car was incredible. Thanks to the team, thanks the crowd. A lot of Ferrari fans here. A very good day."

...But he won't even get that. Max Verstappen comes round on a roaring final lap to take third from his grasp.
