    Lap 41/53

A slow pit stop for Valtteri Bottas - an issue with the jack by the looks of it - and it costs him three places.

Sebastian Vettel comes in to take his five-second penalty, and changes from softs to ultrasofts. Vettel comes out in fifth, as he went in.

    Lap 40/53

Fernando Alonso sounds unhappy on his radio. He complains that he has no tyres, no brakes and he's out of the points. A third successive retirement on the cards?

  3. A dramatic French GP so farpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 24 June 2018

    Lap 39/53

    • Sebastian Vettel hits Valtteri Bottas on the first corner. Both sustain damage but are able to carry on although they are then at the back. Vettel is now up to fourth and Bottas sixth, although Vettel has a five-second time penalty.
    • Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon are out on the first lap after Gasly spun and hit Ocon.
    • Sergio Perez has to pull out on lap 30 because of an engine issue
    • Polesitter Lewis Hamilton leads by more than four seconds, with Max Verstappen second and Daniel Ricciardo third
    • Rain could be coming for the second half of the race.

    Lap 38/53

Max Verstappen, in second, sets a fastest lap of 1:35.155 - just nibbling a little into Lewis Hamilton's five-second lead.

Then Kimi Raikkonen goes faster still, with a lap of 1:34.810.

What's interesting here is that Sebastian Vettel's lap times are slowing. Might he need to make another stop before the end?

Peter Chambers: Vettel getting the kid gloves treatment from the stewards yet again (big shock) and doesn't help when the chasing pack pretty much move over for him ...time for hammertime.

Rich Scales: Vettel got away lucky with only a five-second penalty. Should have been 10 or a couple of grid places at least

This was posted on Twitter just before Raikkonen's pit stop, so Hamilton is now back in the lead. The key info here is the tyre change.

That allows Kimi Raikkonen, who hasn't pitted yet, to take the lead for now. If Raikkonen stays out and holds up Hamilton for a bit, that might help Sebastian Vettel. Seems a long shot, though.

    Lap 32/53

The stewards are still making their way through the aftermath of the mayhem on Lap 1, like an exam marker ploughing through GCSE papers. Now Romain Grosjean is under investigation for allegedly causing a collision on Lap 1 - and is given a five-second time penalty.

Sergio Perez has to retire, with what seems to be an issue with the engine. It's been a miserable weekend for Force India one way or another - and both of their drivers are now out.

Daniel Ricciardo, in third, pits. Good, quick stop - but not quick enough. Sebastian Vettel comes through and moves in front of the Red Bull driver. Vettel is now fourth.

  18. What have you missed?published at 16:04 British Summer Time 24 June 2018

    Lots.

    • Sebastian Vettel hits Valtteri Bottas on the first corner. Both sustain damage but are able to carry on although they are at the back. Vettel is now up to fifth and Bottas ninth, although Vettel has a five-second time penalty.
    • Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon are out on the first lap after Gasly spun and hit Ocon.
    • Polesitter Lewis Hamilton leads by more than 17 seconds, but has not pitted, neither has Kimi Raikkonen in second.
    • Rain could be coming for the second half of the race.

Carlos Sainz seems to lock up going into the pits, and then comes out almost straight into Magnus Ericsson's path. The Sauber driver seems to know what's going on, though, and moves over to avoid a crunch. A perfect demonstration, there, of the unease the drivers felt about the pit lane exit.

That Red Bull pit for Verstappen was an aggressive move. They are hoping for rain for Ricciardo, but Verstappen is not hoping for rain.
