Andrew Elliott: Is there a Golden Boot-like award for F1 where you get points for crashes? It seems that Grosjean and Verstappen are competing for some kind of competition. What could such an award be called?

The Tom: We all thought Verstappen would be Senna-like but he has become much more Villeneuve, exciting but way too accident prone.

Bob McFeil: At this point, I’m pretty much begging someone crashes so McLaren might score points. This is how bad their situation is.

  2. Alonso goes sixthpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

Cracking lap from Fernando Alonso, of 1:29.306, takes him into sixth place. There's still a gap of almost a second to Daniel Ricciardo in fifth, but McLaren are having a decent day so far. And they really, really need a decent day.

Problems for Pierre Gasly, forced off with a power unit problem. "Stop, stop, stop," comes the clear message from the Toro Rosso radio. Impressively, Gasly manages to get off the track without even the need for a yellow flag.

Yes, Daniel Ricciardo is at the back of the remaining big five at present, 0.856 seconds behind Sebastian Vettel. Red Bull seem to be putting a lot of faith in the engine switch to Honda for next season - will it pay off for them?

Red Bull look a bit adrift today. They've fallen away a bit in terms of one-lap pace. The upgrade on the Renault hasn't helped them. I know they won in Austria, but they were so average in qualifying there.

Daniel Eckersley: At what point do we stop being surprised by Sauber’s pace and start acknowledging them as a legit midfield team? Doing a better job than Williams and McLaren right now.

Looking very good at the moment, with Charles Leclerc seventh and Marcus Ericsson 11th.

Hamilton goes wide in a couple of spots in sector one, and doesn't recover from that - going well off the track towards the end of the lap, and finishing it more than half-a-second off Sebastian Vettel's pace.

Incidentally, not only is it International Kissing Day today, it is also National Fried Chicken Day in the United States. If I were you, I'd do the kissing before the fried chicken.

Sebastian Vettel, having switched from medium to soft tyres, goes fastest, with a time of 1:27.552. It's a Ferrari one-two as it stands.

Fernando Alonso's bandaged hand, Romain Grosjean's FP1 crash and the delights of International Kissing Day have got you all tweeting...

Rachel T: Fernando has obviously been punching a few walls. Can't say I blame him.

JPKC: Beginning to think Romain actually has a double barrelled surname - Romain Grosjean-Crashes.

Chris Marsh: I was a bit worried that you had found a picture of me kissing a traffic cone then (see 13:45)! I deleted all of them! Here's one of me and Groot! He seems to be happy.

Max Verstappen, by the way, hadn't set a time in FP2 before his crash, meaning that there is at least one place in the top six up from grabs. It is currently held by Sauber's Charles Leclerc - a driver who is set to join the big six next season. Our chief F1 writer Andrew Benson has had it confirmed to him that the Monegasque driver will be replacing Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari next season.

  14. 'It's annoying'published at 14:32 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has offered his thoughts on Verstappen's crash to Sky Sports.

"It's annoying," Horner says. "It's as annoying as him for anyone, because he's missing out on track time, so he's relying on the feedback on the other car.

"He'll stick to his plan. The data from the two cars is available to bot hdrivers. It just means all the data here will be coming from Daniel Ricciardo's car."

  15. 'He should be making this many mistakes'published at 14:29 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

A shame for Verstappen, that, after a 3-2-1 in his past three races.

"I feel he shouldn't be making this many mistakes," says our chief F1 writer Andrew Benson, helping out on the BBC Radio 5 live commentary. "He's into his fourth season in F1.

"Alonso was a champion in his fourth season, Vettel in his third and Hamilton in his second - admittedly after making mistakes. The great drivers don't make this many mistakes this far into their career."

    Perfect weekends

Not Max Verstappen's perfect weekend at this point, but I've been asking for yours on this packed weekend of sport...

Edward Brown: My son winning his football tournament on Sat, Lewis winning on Sunday and a BBQ to finish it all off.

Adam Johnson: Fave weekend: sunny, win at cricket tomorrow, hopefully England beat Sweden and for a Vettel victory on Sunday, only be made even better with a Hamilton retirement.

Luthando Mbaza: A Vettel win, Brazil getting knocked out by Belgium and both Rafa and Roger making it through to week two of Wimbledon.

It should only be a short stoppage, this - it's just a case of getting the debris off the track.

Verstappen's exasperation really comes across on the team radio. "Are you OK, Max?" he was asked by Red Bull.

Verstappen's response: "No, mate, the rear is damaged - aarrrrggghh!"

That was Verstappen's first lap out of the pits. He just went wide coming out of the corner round Brooklands, and then control got away from him. The Red Bull car is winched away, and Verstappen trudges back to the pits, clearly annoyed with himself.

  20. red flag

Oh goodness - Max Verstappen has spun into the wall! The car does not look good - going rear first into the barrier. Initially, we get the Virtual Safety Car, but then the red flag comes out.
