    Breaking

That decision for Daniel Ricciardo to take grid penalties in Germany and start on the back row last week may not have been the worst one Red Bull have made.

They said it was done to maximise his chances of doing well on a more suitable track for them. Well, Ricciardo is the quickest and Max Verstappen is third. Sebastian Vettel ends second quickest.

Kimi Raikkonen has been told of an issue with his rear brakes. Right at the end, Brendon Hartley spins it. After a few seconds where it looks like he may be stuck there, he gets his car back going.

Romain Grosjean has restored some credibility recently with finishes of fourth and sixth in two of the past three races. He could probably do without a big lock-up. Oh well.

No real drama, but won't have done his tyres much good.

Which drivers have over-achieved or under-performed this season?

Kayleigh‍: I think Hulk has definitely been "best of the rest" this season. He's such a good egg! Vandoorne, sorry pal, you're my under-performer so far this season, along with Grosjean. Though GRO has supplied some entertainment!

Matt Claypole: I'd have to say Raikkonen is seriously underachieving and has been for some time. He may be second driver but that's no excuse for him not challenging for wins consistently. Plus it hurts Ferrari's chances of winning the constructors trophy.

    • 16th - Perez
    • 17th - Grosjean
    • 18th - Giovinazzi
    • 19th - Sirotkin
    • 20th - Ericsson

More bad news for Sergey Sirotkin, slower than Antonio Giovinazzi, with the Italian also better than Marcus Ericsson in the other Sauber.

Which drivers have over-achieved or under-performed this season?

Scotia‏: Surely the single biggest underachiever has to be Kimi as he has the fastest car on the grid underneath him.

Lucy Rose Coleman: Alonso, still plugging away in a car that really isn't up to the job, what have we missed out on with him not being in a decent car.

  11. Postpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 27 July 2018

What of McLaren? Fernando Alonso is just outside the top 10 in 11th, with Stoffel Vandoorne, after a miserable weekend in Germany, 15th today.

Alonso has not finished in four of the past six races, while Vandoorne has not been in the points in any of the past seven races.

Which drivers have over-achieved or under-performed this season?

Bradley Mills‏: Grosjean is underachieving, Haas have the 4th best car on the grid. Grosjean has made more unforced errors than Magnussen. Leclerc is the obvious star but Sauber have done a great job with this car. The same can’t be said for McLaren or Williams.

Chris Marsh aka Rek Arathor: I feel both Vettel and Hamilton have underachieved in races this year. Both have made mistakes which 4 x Champions should not make and both have received more luck than truly great wins/comebacks.

Think Hamilton will take his 'under-achievement', and a 17-point lead, this season.

Nico Hulkenberg is seventh fastest, but didn't want to have to be doing this today - helping his stricken car back on to the recovery track.

  15. Ricciardo to the toppublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 27 July 2018

Red Bull were hopeful of a good weekend. Daniel Ricciardo took grid penalties in Germany to maximise their Hungarian Grand Prix chances and the Australian, on the softs, goes to the top thanks to a 1:17.613.

We could really do with a genuine three-way team fight this weekend after Red Bull have been well off the pace recently.

Hamilton has a big slide, he has to go into the run-off over, missing the corner, but he saves himself from any more pain.

"These tyres are terrible," says the Briton, who is on the softs.

  17. Verstappen up to secondpublished at 11:07 British Summer Time 27 July 2018

Max Verstappen had been on the mediums before, now he chooses the softs and gets an instant return, moving up to second, only nine thousandths behind Sebastian Vettel.

Kimi Raikkonen on the softs goes to the top, but it does not last long as Sebastian Vettel on the ultrasofts quickly regains the bragging rights thanks to a 1:17.692. Valtteri Bottas has had a big lock up, while on the mediums over at turn one.

Which drivers have over-achieved or under-performed? Evaluate the 2018 drivers

Welshguy78: Over achieving - I'd go for Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg. Both doing excellent jobs and showing up team mates. Under achieving has to be Stoffel Vandoorne and Romain Grosjean. Both will be lucky to get drives next year. Not good enough.

David Gannon‏: Underachievers probably Sirotkin, Vandoorne and Ericsson and maybe Grosjean? Given away a ton of points for Haas because of stupid mistakes. Overachievers are probably Leclerc and Alonso.
