  5. Happy birthday Alonsopublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 29 July 2018

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Fernando Alonso celebrates his 37th birthday today. You might think 11th on the grid is nothing to be happy about for a man who has won 32 grands prix and two world titles but he said he was “extremely happy” with the result.

McLaren might have been expected to go well here, after he qualified eighth in Spain and seventh in Monaco, but, no, they have been uncompetitive and Alonso said they were “had a lot of concerns before qualifying in dry conditions”.

  8. What will Mercedes race pace be?published at 13:38 British Summer Time 29 July 2018

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at the Hungaroring

Another key question about this race is, what will Mercedes’ race pace be? Just like last year, they were not competitive with the Ferrari in the dry over a single lap. But will that apply in the race, too?

Lewis Hamilton said: “For a track that’s usually been so good for me and worked so well for me, it’s not been really the strongest for me the last couple of years, this year and last year. Even this weekend, if it was dry Valtteri (Bottas) had been quicker than me all weekend. Been struggling with the set-up and the feel with these tyres. The long run was so-so.

"The Ferraris were quicker on the long run – but, as Valtteri mentioned, positioning is really very key here. It’s the third hardest track in the calendar to overtake. It will mean it’s probably a close race between us all but getting through the stint is going to be key, not going over the (tyre) temperature limits that we have been facing. Yeah. It’s going to be close.”

What is going to happen today?

Kayleigh‍: Kinda hoping Seb takes it from lights out, and goes into the summer break with the momentum. Just want a good race though! Ideally with no team orders.

Dan Nelson: A shock 1st for Raikkonen, 2nd for Vettel and 3rd for Hamilton. It's about time Raikkonen gets what he deserves!

Too right Kayleigh about no team orders. Both Ferrari and Mercedes again showed who are their number ones last week with Raikkonen ordered to (reluctantly) let Sebastian Vettel pass him and Valtteri Bottas was told he couldn't overtake Lewis Hamilton, despite being on fresher tyres.

  11. Red Bull are hungry in Hungarypublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 29 July 2018

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Red Bull came to Hungary expecting their most competitive absolute showing since Monaco - Max Verstappen’s Austria win notwithstanding - but it has not worked out that way.

They were close to a second off the pace in final practice, and struggled in the wet with low tyre temperatures, Verstappen managing only seventh on the grid. Team-mate Daniel Ricciardo was even worse off.

He got yellow flags for Lance Stroll’s crash in Q2 in the brief window when the track was at its quickest and that was him out.

The Australian, who has been on a bit of a difficult run of late with a lot of bad luck, said he was looking forward to the summer break: “I need some time away from the car. I am growing frustrated with these problems, so probably it’s healthy for me to have some time off.” Both, though, are optimistic they can make something happen in the race.

Once more, Max Verstappen's fans provide the colour at a Formula 1 race. The Dutchman only starts seventh though after a forgettable Saturday for Red Bull, with team-mate Daniel Ricciardo only 12th.

  15. Force India asked me to start administration proceedings - Perezpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 29 July 2018

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at the Hungaroring

Force India driver Sergio Perez says he started administration proceedings against the team to fend off a winding-up petition from another creditor.

The Mexican told BBC Sport: "The team asked me to do it. Otherwise, it would have been very bad."

Force India were put in administration by the High Court on Friday evening and are the subject of interest from several potential buyers. Perez said he wanted to help protect the future of the team. The 28-year-old, who has driven for Force India since 2014, was owed unpaid salary of several million pounds.

His Mexican backers sponsor the team, and from that income the driver is meant to be paid his retainer. Perez said he started the legal proceedings "to look after the 400 people who work in the team".

He added: "It was very tricky and difficult. Every day really counted and I was told to help the team, to secure those jobs and that is the main reason behind it. It was a very difficult decision for me because I am in the middle of it, but the picture will look bigger in the near future."

  19. Is rain Ferrari's downfall?published at 13:11 British Summer Time 29 July 2018

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at the Hungaroring

The rain in qualifying was exactly what Ferrari did not need, especially after Sebastian Vettel had thrown away a possible win in Germany last weekend.

“In the dry we were pretty much in control," said Vettel. "In the wet we are missing a bit, so we are pretty happy to take the second row and for the race we have a good car no matter the conditions.

"The race is long so we see what we can do. We are starting fourth so we focus on winning from fourth.”

The question is, how, on a track where overtaking is so difficult?

    What will happen today?

Dan Nelson: Going to be a great race! Ferraris the faster car IF the circuit is dry, red bulls making there way up. If everyone gets away cleanly after lap 1, we have a great race on our hands! Even if some do crash, a shock is always welcome!

Karen Waddy: The way his luck's been going this year I wouldn't be surprised if Bottas gets rammed by Vettel in the first few seconds. Those Ferarris will be quick off the start and will be pushing to get ahead on a track where overtaking isn't easy.
