  1. 'Hamilton didn't leave me any space'published at 16:06 British Summer Time 2 September 2018

Sebastian Vettel, fourth for Ferrari, feels hard done by over his early collision with Lewis Hamilton, as he tells Sky Sports: "I think you have more angles than I have but I tried to pass Kimi and he opened the brakes and I didn't have a gap.

"Lewis saw the gap round the outside but he didn't leave me any space. Then I was the one who spun around, which was ironic. It wasn't too peachy but I recovered and got a lot of points. It doesn't help when you lose points but it's not the end of the world. We will all still wake up tomorrow morning.

"I'm down for the people. Their support is incredible. But you get spun round and there's not much you can do. I'm not too worried. If we have the pace, it doesn't take a long time to get the points gap down."

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think that's what makes motor racing so special - that Sunday can be so different to what you expect after Saturday.

"It was a beautiful pass from Lewis - and Kimi was super fair. It was racing between two champions."

Lewis Hamilton wins the Italian Grand Prix

F1 in the 2000s: Well done to Lewis Hamilton & Mercedes for winning today's Italian GP. A brilliant driver and a brilliant team succeeding with a great strategy (and the correct allocation of tyres) to win with the second-best car.

F1 Statster: My thoughts: - Racing Incident at start was...a racing incident. VET unlucky but HAM did nothing wrong. - FER were the faster car (just). VET finish 16 secs behind HAM even with 2 stops + damage. - BOT did his job as “wingman” , RAI couldn’t (harsh I know but fair).

Tom Dee: One of the best races so far. Vettel at fault in his collision but drove great after and baby Verstappen should have been given a drive-through. Just my opinion.

Lewis Hamilton is greeted by a chorus of boos from Ferrari fans as he speaks to F1 legend Felipe Massa on the podium.

Hamilton seems unsure whether to charm the crowd or troll them: "Today was so difficult. We've got a great crowd here and although the negativity is never great, that's what powered me along.

"I love being here in Italy. I love the food. The track is incredible, and it's a such an honour to win here in front of such a great crowd."

Lewis Hamilton wins the Italian Grand Prix

With seven races of the season left, Lewis Hamilton has a title lead of 30 points over Sebastian Vettel - the biggest gap of the year.

It means Hamilton can even afford a DNF next time out and he would still hold on to that lead. This could well be a decisive moment in this year's title race.

  13. 'Sometimes the racing was not as fair as I would hope'published at 15:44 British Summer Time 2 September 2018

Valtteri Bottas, of Mercedes, who took third place after Max Verstappen was given a five-second time penalty: "I was really trying to do everything I can to get to the podium. First my mission was to hold off Kimi, and then I was challenging with Max.

"There was hard racing, and sometimes it was not as fair as I would hope, so he [Verstappen] got a penalty and I am on the podium. As a team, we take this result. We got more points than Ferrari in their home. We hope next time we can be better."

Lewis Hamilton wins the Italian Grand Prix

Kimi Raikkonen, who came second, says: "It was quick enough but unfortunately our rear tyres went and it was a losing battle from that point.

"I tried but it was impossible, far from ideal. We did our best. For sure we tried, the rear tyres gave up before the race ended, at least we can take the second place."

Lewis Hamilton wins the Italian Grand Prix

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, the race winner: "I want to give it up to Ferrari who put up a great challenge and gave us a great fight. I want to think the guys here and everyone back home; without their belief it wouldn't have been possible.

"There's been a lot of negativity but there were a lot of British flags out there today. They know who they are. In future I only want to turn to a negative to a positive. Thanks to Valtteri too. We never give up."

A word on the team-playing of Valtteri Bottas, who did an excellent job of holding Raikkonen up and bringing him closer to Lewis Hamilton after the Briton had come back out of the pits in third place and more than four seconds behind Raikkonen.

By the time Bottas finally pitted, that gap was only one second and Hamilton was later able to get past the Ferrari man. Hamilton will get the headlines, but boy did his team-mate help him out.
