So that start, Kimi Raikkonen holds off his team-mate off the line, but the Finn locks up, maybe some early damage to his tyres. Hamilton and Vettel almost touch, Kevin Magnussen goes across the grass, Hamilton and Vettel are side by side and this time they do touch.

Vettel spins, and loses lots of places. What an opening lap.

This circuit is full of long straights. It's a low downforce track. It should be good for overtaking. The focus for the drivers has to be on making sure they nail that start.

If Ferrari get out of the first chicane with a one-two, they have all the aces to deal with Lewis Hamilton.

Strategy? As always at Monza, a one stop. Teams run as long as they can on the super-soft most will start with - quite possibly beyond half distance - before switching to the soft.

Some outside the top 10 might try it the other way around, in which case the first stint could go even longer.

  16. What future for Ocon?published at 13:59 British Summer Time 2 September 2018

Driver market gossip has been front and centre this weekend, as is often the case at the Italian Grand Prix, and other than the question of who will be driving the second Ferrari in 2019, much of the focus is on the issues involving Force India, McLaren and Esteban Ocon.

The complex political situation surrounding this, which you can read about here, could end up with Ocon out of a drive. This is partly because of his links to Mercedes - other teams are reluctant to sign drivers if they feel they are on a piece of elastic to another team, or that that team might try to exercise influence over them.

This is leading to some serious questions at Mercedes about the validity of their junior driver programme.

Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said: “If the drivers are stigmatised as Mercedes drivers, it seems to be not the best selling proposition. I still feel that the best talent needs to be supported and developed and I hope we find a solution for these guys. If we can’t, I would question the junior programme.”

Would Wolff consider releasing Ocon to get him a drive elsewhere? “Fundamentally why we do this is we take great enjoyment in helping young talent lacking finances. But if our support works until F1 but then is detrimental to them getting the right seats, you need to consider these things and then think what does it mean to be a Mercedes driver?”

We had the fastest F1 lap yesterday. If we don't have a safety car, we could have the fastest (full-distance) race - the current record is one hour 14 minutes 19.8 seconds, which is the time it took Michael Schumacher to win the 2003 Italian GP for Ferrari.
