This is some novel pre-race entertainment. Am a big fan though. You don't want to be in the first row up though. Someone standing on your shoulders and loads of people pushing you from behind. Not too comfy.

"Vettel is driving dangerously in the pit lane," says Lewis Hamilton over team radio. Not even started and it's getting spicy!

So could we be seeing a first-lap collision between the two Mercedes drivers? Lewis Hamilton has said he was "too nice" when not attacking Valtteri Bottas in Azerbaijan. What else is going to happen today?

With Mercedes so dominant in qualifying, what hope for Ferrari?

Well they will be hoping for a repeat of 2016 here when Mercedes' Nico Rosberg led Lewis Hamilton in the title and in the race itself.

Rosberg was on the right side of the track, Hamilton was behind him and went for a space that wasn't there, went wide to the right on the grass, lost control came back on to the track and wiped out his Mercedes team-mate with both cars instantly out of the race.

However, Ferrari could not completely benefit as Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the race, although the Ferrari pair of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel did finish second and third respectively.

Lewis Hamilton v Valtteri Bottas part five. Or should it be Bottas v Hamilton? The Finn has now taken pole position for three consecutive races and is in a rich vein of form. He starts today’s race a point clear of Hamilton and seven metres ahead.

The pole man has only retained the lead on the first lap into the first corner once so far this year - and that was in Baku two weeks ago, when Hamilton was unusually kind to Bottas on his outside at Turn One. He’s vowed that won’t happen again. And as the start and first corner are likely to decide who wins the race, it’s the critical moment of the afternoon. Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff admits it “doesn’t make us feel comfortable”.

He was going to talk to the drivers on Sunday morning to remind them of their responsibilities. It’s all still cordial so far. Will it remain that way?

So that means we should be starting off like this, as long as there are no more last-minute penalties.

But it's even worse for Nico Hulkenberg as he goes to the back and starts from the pits.

We're at the point of season when drivers start getting grid penalties. We already knew that Daniel Ricciardo would have a three-place grid penalty for the most rubbish crash in Formula 1 history, reversing into a stationary Daniil Kvyat in Baku.

George Russell spun, slid and went into a wall backwards yesterday and needed a new gear box, so that's five places for him, and there's been more today...

  11. Hamilton uncomfortable with qualifying runpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 12 May 2019

It’s been a while since Lewis Hamilton was out-qualified three times in a row by his team-mate - it’s not happened since 2016, to be precise. And Lewis Hamilton on Saturday afternoon was clearly not comfortable about it. He admitted he’d just not put together great laps, and that he needed to work on it.

But this has been a bit of a pattern for Hamilton in recent years. He’s always strong - but he has tended to not be as good in the first half of years as he has in the second. It has taken him until about half-distance to get his head fully around the possibilities of his car - and then he goes stratospheric. This seemed to be in his mind here.

“I don’t think it’s about Q3,” he said. “I think it’s about the whole weekend and it’s the feel that I have in the car, I just need to work on it so I don’t think it’s really about my approach in qualifying particularly. But of course I’m looking at all solutions and I’ll get there eventually.”

Valtteri Bottas beat Lewis Hamilton to take his third pole position in a row and lead a Mercedes one-two in qualifying at the Spanish Grand Prix.

The Finn was 0.634 seconds ahead of Hamilton, who made a series of errors on his first lap before a slower track meant an improvement was impossible on the next.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was third with an 0.866secs gap to Bottas. Red Bull's Max Verstappen was fourth, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Today's the day. This is the day we've been waiting for.

The top two have been unstoppable.

They've entertained and thrilled us and pushed each other on to great heights.

But at the end of the day, one will be celebrating and the other will be disappointed.

That's right. It's championship leader Valtteri Bottas versus world champion Lewis Hamilton on an all-Mercedes front row for the Spanish Grand Prix.

What else could we be talking about?
