A five-second penalty would drop Vettel only down to second as Charles Leclerc is more than 11 seconds away, but it is still going to be a bitter pill to swallow for the German.

Mercedes could well be winning for the seventh time this season in seven races.

I imagine the stewards will have a look at that and Ferrari will be nervy on the pit wall about that one.

That Vettel moment there was very similar to Max Verstappen on Kimi Raikkonen at Suzuka last year and he got a five-second time penalty for that.

Vettel made a big mistake there - he dropped the ball, Hamilton wasn't pressuring him that much, if he gets a time penalty now, Hamilton can just sit there and this race will fizzle out.

    Vettel holds lead from Hamilton

Don Uorri: Vettel under pressure is a choke artist, Ferrari need to replace him with Ricciardo

smartnizi: Go HAM go, Canada is waiting for you

Chris Lovell: Vettel is lucky that wasn't the wall of Champions. Looked to me like Vettel cut Hamilton off there, potential penalty? For me Vettel didn't rejoin safely and forced Hamilton towards the wall stopping him from overtaking. Penalty for me.

We're definitely going to be hearing more about that one. Is Vettel going to get a penalty and has he thrown this one away?

The orange icon is on screen and that means Vettel is under investigation for that move off the grass and back on to the track, a movement that nearly sent Hamilton into a wall.

    Hamilton gaining on Vettel #bbcf1

Brian Ellis:If Hamilton wins this, the season's over, six-time world champion in the bag. #Ferrari, external should have let Leclerc race from the 1st race.

Kumaran Ravendradas: Vettel's confidence won't be as high as it has been in the past. It will be interesting to see if he can hold it together as Hamilton applies the pressure. It is called the wall of champions for a reason.

Hamilton will smell blood now that is Vettel showing a bit of the weakness and showing he is on the limit. He just had a big oversteer into Turn Three and caught the grass.

Toto Wolff is not happy at Vettel, who nearly sent Hamilton into the wall when rejoining the action. A time penalty affected the podium in Monaco, with Verstappen dropping from second to fourth.

Are we going to have another penalty, this time for Sebastian Vettel.

I spoke to an engineer just before this race and they said watch out the last 20 laps... that's where it's going to kick off.

  11. Vettel off on to the grasspublished at 20:13 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

    Lap 49/70

We asked if Vettel were going to have a meltdown? The German very nearly does. He goes wide, off on to the grass, but lucky, lucky Vettel gets back on to the track and is still in the race, still in the lead.

But was it a legal move?

  12. Postpublished at 20:13 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

Hamilton still with a second of the leader. Everyone else is pretty much nowhere in terms of a race win, unless, Vettel and Hamilton take each other out of course.

A surprise win on the cards? #bbcf1

William Ogle: Ricciardo is apparently at 500-1 to win. Get your fiver in now, and hope for some craziness up front?

That is one crazy bet there William. Go on, take a punt, there could be a holiday in it for you, although we do need all the top five to fall apart for a Ricciardo victory.

Verstappen used up a lot of his mediums when the team tried to get him to start the race on the mediums yesterday in qualifying. He doesn't have any new mediums, so they were forced to run him on those used ones, then he will pit for a shiny new pair of red softs.
