That's it for today. Yesterday in practice, Red Bull looked in with a shot. Today Ferrari found another gear to allow the young Monegasque to drive off into the sunset over the Black Sea away from the rest of the field.

Though, in Sochi, pole doesn't always equal a victory. It's a long way down to the first corner at Turn Two, so Ferrari should want the best start to maximise their straight-line speed advantage and get ahead of the field - equally Mercedes will want to prevent that.

In 2017, Sebastian Vettel started on pole and Bottas who started behind him in third, got a better start and took the lead a few metres off the line.

    What could happen tomorrow?

Stephen Taylor: Leclerc driving style in qualifying reminds of me of watching Hakkinen from 1998-2000 when he was up against Schumacher- super aggressive and borderline over the limit but yet amazingly fast.

Leclerc may be level on four in a row, but Michael Schumacher has 58 poles at Ferrari, and 68 in total. So give the lad a few more years, then we'll review these stats.

  6. Level with legendspublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 28 September 2019

Charles Leclerc's six pole record at Ferrari makes him level with Juan Manuel Fangio and Phil Hill (no relation to Damon and Graham Hill) in their Ferrari days.

But they drove cars with pram wheels in the 1950s so it's entirely different.

It's not just Mika Hakkinen's birthday today. Erik Comas turns 56. Given some of the shunts he used to have in the eighties and nineties, it's a milestone to celebrate...

  8. Not perfect, but good enoughpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 28 September 2019

Earlier in the season - maybe Azerbaijan after the crash at the castle - Leclerc said he wanted to focus on his qualifying laps to minimise the mistakes he was making in Q3...

It seems to have worked, but even by his own standards it's not perfect yet.

The last time Romain Grosjean started in the top 10 was in Hungary when he started P9.

In total this year, he's qualified inside the top 10 six times. His highest place being P6 in Australia and Germany.

  10. Most consecutive polespublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 28 September 2019

Charles Leclerc is fast joining the ranks of Ferrari legends.

The 21-year-old Monaco driver is the first for the Scuderia to record four pole positions in a row since Michael Schumacher, who reached that feat in the final race of the 2000 season in Malaysia.

Schumacher went on to extend his run to seven straight pole positions after topping the grid in qualifying for the first three races of the 2001 season, finishing his run in Brazil.

Lewis Hamilton, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna are the only other drivers to share that mark of seven in a row.

Senna leads the way with eight poles in a row, spanning the 1988 and 1989 seasons.

  13. Russian Grand Prix victoriespublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 28 September 2019

Looking ahead to tomorrow... that's twice now Ferrari have broken the Mercedes streak in Russia (a pole each for Vettel and Leclerc.)

Three wins go to Hamilton, but 2018's win should have been Bottas'.

The Finn led from pole, and he was on track to take the race win, but team orders came into play to allow Hamilton to collect the haul of points to strengthen his championship campaign - hence the now famous "Valtteri, it's James" phrase.

  14. Red Bull lose 'more than a second' on the straights to Ferraripublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 28 September 2019

    Max VerstappenImage source, Reuters

Max Verstappen qualified P4, but he has a five-place grid penalty for using new engine parts so he starts P9 tomorrow.

Verstappen says: "Ferrari didn't turn their engines up until today. It's more than a second we lose on the straights combined - you can't do anything about that. There are corners on this circuit but a second? It's till too much.

"To split to Mercedes cars was the best thing we could to today. I think realistically [I could finish] P5, maybe P4. We qualified P4 so if you have the pace maybe you can go forward."

  15. Six poles for Charles Leclercpublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 28 September 2019

Six poles, four of them consecutively, and two race wins. All in his first year at Ferrari, and his second year in Formula 1.

    What a talent.

The 0.3 sec gap between Vettel and Leclerc that I wrote about earlier increased to 0.4 sec...

  18. 'Seven to eight tenths lost on the straight to Ferrari'published at 14:28 British Summer Time 28 September 2019

    Toto WolffImage source, Reuters

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss says: "I'm really happy for the team. Lewis extracted everything from the lap - shame for Valtteri [going fifth] because he made the most of the lap as well. With seven to eight tenths lost on the straight [to Ferrari] there is not so much we can do. That's quite a massive amount.

"We have had many good season and many great races and now we have another challenge on our hands to fight."

  19. Outside of the top four...published at 14:28 British Summer Time 28 September 2019

Disappointment for Bottas. Nico Hulkenberg, who doesn't have a drive for next year, starts P7 ahead of his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo in P10.

Carlos Sainz is best of the rest in P5, and Lando Norris was only 0.079 sec behind him.

  20. 'They go to another level - jet mode'published at 14:25 British Summer Time 28 September 2019

    Lewis HamiltonImage source, Reuters

Lewis Hamilton speaking to Sky Sports after finishing second in qualifying: "It was a tough qualifying session because these guys (the Ferraris) have some crazy speeds on the straights.

"They go to another level - jet mode.

"I gave it everything I had at the end and I'm so glad it came together.

"I wasn't expecting to get on the front row so I'm really happy.

"They have that power so we have got to try something. I think the team have done a good job for putting us into that position."
