Lewis Hamilton dominated the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to end the season in which he won a sixth world drivers' title on a high.

The Mercedes driver led away from pole position and cruised off in the distance, untroubled by anyone behind. In a soporific race, Red Bull's Max Verstappen took a comfortable second after Ferrari slipped backwards.

Charles Leclerc ran second in the early laps, ahead of Verstappen, but slipped back to third.

Leclerc held off an attack from Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas in the closing stages, the Finn right on his gearbox on the final lap, after an excellent race from the back of the grid.

But Leclerc could yet lose third place as Ferrari are under investigation for a fuel discrepancy before the race - the amount Ferrari said was in his car being different from the amount that was in it when it was measured by governing body the FIA.

What a half-century this is. This was the 50th time Lewis Hamilton has started on pole and then gone on to win. It's his 19th time where he has led from lights to flag. One more and the record is his.

The whole of the German Grand Prix was voted the favourite moment of the year, so just to recap what exactly happened...

It rained a lot.

Mercedes dressed up in vintage clothing to celebrate 125 years in motorsport. But it didn't go so well for them since both drivers crashed - Bottas retried and Hamilton trailed home in ninth.

There was a corner which appeared soapy, and even with the green banded wet tyres it sent many off into the gravel. Some returned to the race, others didn't, and only 13 drivers overall finished.

Nico Hulkenberg was looking strong for his first ever podium, but then he too crashed.

Lance Stroll led the race in the closing stages as the Racing Point took a gamble on switching back to slicks as the rain subsided, but was overtaken once everyone else cottoned on.

The drivers who eventually made it to the podium were all current or ex-Toro Rosso and Red Bull drivers.

Max Verstappen won, Sebastian Vettel drove the perfect race from last to second, and Daniil Kvyat took his third podium.

A good year for Honda Racing. There were question marks over them at the start of the season, but 11 podiums and three race wins later shows it has been a good 2019 for them.

George Russell's 17th-placed finish means he is the only one of the 20 drivers to end the season without a point, although he did having a perfect qualifying record over his team-mate Robert Kubica.

Russell will be back next year though and hopefully we will see him closer to the front in 2020.

This is what every driver did on their tyres today. A solid 37-lap stint on the mediums helped Sergio Perez take seventh.

That's 170 podiums for Red Bull. With a settled partnership now, which they didn't have at the start of the year, there will surely be plenty more coming next year.

All the top three indulged in some donuts on the start-finish straight. Verstappen so much he didn't even make it to the position board - just finished and jumped out.

Charles Leclerc, who is still awaiting the results of the decision concerning his pre-race fuel level, says: "It was very tricky we stopped quite early to try and force the others to and we never managed to undercut [Verstappen].

"I wanted to give everything for the win, at the end third place is OK, but when you see the gap it's disappointing because it looks like we are missing something."

Asked on how he feels 21 races later at Ferrari compared to the start of the year, Leclerc says: "I didn't have that confidence [at the start of the year]. I always thought if I do the job correctly success would come.

"Seb is a four-time world champion so it would've been difficult to believe it, I've learned from the mistakes and it will be useful for 2020 to have a good season."

Mattia Binotto, Ferrari's team principal says: "We did our best each time but we are unhappy...

"I don't think these are regrets - we always need to look ahead. We are not yet sufficient, we know our car is not reliable enough. We are trying to create some solid foundations with the team, to try and challenge next near with the others."

BillM-RC: I do not think that Lewis Hamilton will settle for less than 100 wins in his career.

Paul Heyes: How many wins has Hamilton got only because his team-mate was not allowed to compete against him? ..how many wins does Schumacher have during all those years his team-mate was not allowed to compete against him?

Valtteri Bottas reflects on the race, where he finished in fourth, and the season. He says: "Coming from the back we had a really strong race today it was difficult nearly 20 laps without DRS [which] made it more difficult to make progress through the field.

"I need more consistency over the season, Lewis is always there," he gestures a level with his hand, "and I need to find the balance and the ways to be at my best more often. As a driver there's many things to learn and improve from this year that we will be working a lot on over the winter.

"It is really learning from the mistakes from this year - looking at in detail what caused it and how to avoid it and I'm sure I can figure it out, I have good confidence from this season."

The results are in! And you lot thought the whole German Grand Prix was the best moment of the season. Hamilton winning his sixth title came second, with 23% of the vote.

This was Nico Hulkenberg's 178th, and potentially final, Formula 1 race, although he ended in 12th today, narrowly missing out on the points. After the race, this is what he said.

Engineer: "And Nico just a word, thanks for very much it's been a great three years, thank you."

NH: "Thank you, I wish I could say the same, mate."

Engineer: "Hahaha perfect."

NH: "Just pulling your leg, thank you for everything."

Here's what really happens in the commentary box...

Sebastian Vettel is speaking to the media, and asked on how he feels overall about his performance this season, he says: "I would like to go in my room and get changed but I have to answer your questions first.

"We didn't have the year we were hoping for full stop. The reasons are clear, the lessons are clear and it's up to us to take them on board. As a team we must perform stronger, and as a individual I can do better it wasn't a great year from my side.

"I don't think it was as bad it looks as there were many smalls things...

"But I know that I can do better and that's for sure the target for next year and hopefully we get a stronger package to fight at the front with Mercedes and Red Bull."

Even if Charles Leclerc is disqualifed (we're still waiting to see what happens with that), he will still finish ahead of Sebastian Vettel.

What a first season for Leclerc at Ferrari. Cast your minds back to Australia and race one when Leclerc was not even allowed to attack Vettel and was ordered to stay behind his team-mate with fourth place up for grabs.

Will Leclerc now start the 2020 season as Ferrari's number one?
