Ferrari start this race as the only front-running team on a split tyre strategy, Charles Leclerc on the mediums like all the other top drivers, and Sebastian Vettel on the softs. Strategists believe that Vettel is now at a significant disadvantage because the soft is not a great race tyre - especially on the Ferrari - and has much bigger degradation than the medium, even if he may jump Leclerc off the line because of its greater initial grip.

Ferrari have been struggling in the last sector all weekend but their disadvantage is nowhere near as bad on the medium and hard, which will be Leclerc’s race tyres, so the 22-year-old is reasonably confident heading into the race. He also wants to try to overhaul the 11-point deficit to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and reclaim the third place in the championship he lost after the Ferrari crash and Verstappen victory in Brazil.

Leclerc said: “I will take quite a bit of risk at the start. I need to take some risk. I need to finish in front of Max in the championship so I will give it all and we will see what happens.”

    Your race predictions #bbcf1

David M: Would like to see Lewis Hamilton get away cleanly from the start and the world champion finish the season with a win. A Leclerc-Verstappen battle would be nice.

Tracey Pankhurst: I honestly can’t see Lewis at Ferrari! Like the #bbcf1 , externalteam have said over this weekend, he’s been a Mercedes driver his whole F1 career and I can’t see that changing anytime soon!

He only starts third today after a bit of a mix-up but Charles Leclerc ends the season with the highest number of poles than anyone with seven.

If only Ferrari had started the season better then maybe this could've been the dramatic title-deciding race we would've all hoped for.

The sun is setting on the 2019 Formula 1 season - both literally and figuratively. The sky at Yas Marina is turning golden as day slowly becomes night and the drivers are about to embark on one last dance before thoughts turn fully to 2020 and another high-octane spin around the world. It’s been a remarkable season in many ways, the predictability of Lewis Hamilton’s sixth championship a stark contrast from the often vivid and thrilling on-track action of the individual races.

Will the season disappear off into history this evening with a whimper or a bang? Sadly, Abu Dhabi races can tend towards the soporific, but the grid is set nicely, with the world champion on pole and the two leading figures of the new generation, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, right behind him. The drivers will want to put on a good show and end the season on a high.

  12. Hamilton on pole as Leclerc fails to start second flying lap in timepublished at 11:40 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2019

Lewis Hamilton secured a superb pole position for the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The world champion, who had not had a pole since the German Grand Prix in late July, beat Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas by 0.194 seconds.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was third, 0.360secs behind, as there was yet another foul-up at Ferrari. Charles Leclerc did not cross the line in time to start a final lap and seemed to blame team-mate Sebastian Vettel.

Leclerc still managed to qualify fourth, ahead of Vettel, but the incident comes hot on the heels of the last race in Brazil where they crashed together, putting both cars out of the race.

"We are not going to make it," Leclerc said over the radio, after being told earlier in the lap that they were tight on time. "Seb is slowing down."

In this instance, though, it seems Vettel was not at fault and that the team simply let the cars out too late. Red Bull's Alexander Albon took sixth place, with Lando Norris best of the rest in seventh.

After a long season, we've got one more race to entertain us.

And we've got plenty of flashpoints for excitement. Hamilton and Verstappen are on the front row, the two Ferraris are next to each other on the second and Valtteri Bottas has to weave his way through the pack from the back.

It's been a season full of drama and great moments, let's all hope we have a thriller in the last race of 2019.
