To fix those polystyrene bollards that Grosjean just wiped out at turn two.

Honda have dropped back a lot since Gasly out-powered Hamilton to the finish line in Brazil last year. It looked like their engine could compete with that of Mercedes but since the regulation changes at the start of the season they seem to have fallen back.

Vettel and Grosjean are wheel-to-wheel at turn two. Grosjean then has to go through a polystyrene bollard area. That's why Ricciardo got a penalty for not doing the same.

Now there are a few less bollards to navigate as Grosjean ploughs right through the middle of the polystyrene. He's all OK. The bollards. They're dust.

    Hamilton and Ricciardo handed penalties

Kev Bryan: All those comparing Ricardo to Hamilton and their responses to penalties. That’s why Lewis is a 6 time champion and Daniel isn’t. It’s called hunger for the win. Not saying it’s pretty, just a part of his edge.

Joanne Morgan: People are so quick to forget that Hamilton accepted his penalty gracefully in Italy. And who wouldn't be unhappy for being penalised after checking with the team?

Joe Baker: To those saying Danny Ric is reacting better to his penalty than Hamilton - that's because it was his own fault, not the teams! Plus his hasn't cost him a record race win.

  5. Race ban a concern for Hamilton?published at 13:27 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Jennie Gow
BBC Radio 5 live pit-lane reporter

Lewis Hamilton has 10 penalty points on his license and he will have to be a seriously good boy for the next four races.

He cannot pick up more than two penalty points otherwise he will get a one-race ban.

  6. Postpublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

Lewis Hamilton has been given one penalty point for each of his practice starts infringements at the beginning.

That takes him up to 10, with 12 being the mark that gives him a one-race ban. Here's Jennie with some more...

    Lap 40/53

    1. Bottas
    2. Verstappen (+11.7)
    3. Hamilton (+22.2)
    4. Perez (+31)
    5. Ricciardo (+41.5)
    6. Leclerc (+47.2)
    7. Ocon (+53.8)
    8. Kvyat (+54.8)
    9. Gasly (+61.8)
    10. Norris (+71.4)

All of the top 10 are on the hards apart from Kvyat on the mediums. He may still be looking at a potential top six finish. Ricciardo has five seconds to add to his total so will tight to hold on to fifth.

The Haas pair of Magnussen and Grosjean are those next in the list aiming to displace Norris for a point.

    Bottas leads from Verstappen

Debbie Rose: I'm praying for a safety car!

Codswallop: the penalties show the lack of options for the stewards. They should have other options beyond time penalties. They should be reserved for incidents that cause drivers to gain an advantage and not technicalities.

Andrew Ogley: Can't blame Hamilton for being upset about the penalties. It seems like miscommunication and misunderstanding, and not his driving, are costing him points and podium places.

Right, where's the action going to come from? At the moment, not too sure.

Still, the last couple of races have been amazing.

Valtteri Bottas has eight F1 wins to his name. All he has to do is keep the car on the track for the rest of this one and that tally moves to nine.

  12. 'So frustrating'published at 13:16 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

It's so frustrating to have these regulations which state that if you go over the white line by mere inches you have to dart to the left and rejoin the track, which is more dangerous.

    Ricciardo handed five-second penalty

Tanya Smith: Ricciardo gets a penalty and says he'll just drive faster, thats the way to do it.

Willem: Remarkable difference in reaction to the penalty from Ricciardo (compared to e.g. Hamilton): "I'll just drive faster"

Johnnie Doe: The difference in Danny Ric’s radio messages and Hamilton’s messages shows a massive difference. He may be the best ever but he doesn’t half act like an absolute spoiled child stomping his feet.

Sara Turle: Oh no. You too Ricciardo. 5 sec penalty. Accepted. He's at fault. "I'll drive faster". Respect. Love this Aussie!

A few times this season I've said it is going to be going to routine then it's got crazy. We've had tyres popping all over the place at Silverstone and Pierre Gasly becoming an unlikely winner in Italy.

We're at that stage when we need something unexpected to happen.

At the moment we have Bottas 12 seconds clear of Verstappen, who is 10 seconds clear of Hamilton.

  15. Ocon has lost valuable timepublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

Ocon has finally got past Vettel but is way back from Perez now. He was in front of him early in the race but is 15 seconds behind the Mexican now, showing just how costly that time lost behind the Ferrari was.

Love that message from Daniel Ricciardo. That penalty probably means there are no horrible tattoos coming team boss Cyril Abiteboul's way today.

Renault: You have a five second penalty for the turn two incident.

Daniel Ricciardo: OK, I'll drive faster.

    Renault: OK.

Ricciardo: It is my bad. I'll make up for it.

Bottas leads, Verstappen second, Hamilton third

Aidan: All drivers are like toddlers on the radio, Verstappen is the worst.

Harry: The stick Hamilton gets is ridiculous. Saying he's crying like a baby cause of he's penalties... Like Verstappen or Raikkonen or Vettel or Gasly are any better when they get penalties through their teams screw ups...

Babatunde: Formula 1 has now turned to joke sport dishing out penalty like ice cream. Pathetic!!!!!!

In comes Daniil Kvyat into the pits, so Hamilton doesn't need to overtake him on the track.

Kvyat comes back out in eighth on the mediums and, with pretty much everyone else on the hards, will be having a late assault on the points, much to the delight of his home crowd. Remember, there's up to 30,000 people in the stands at this one.

  20. How they standpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 27 September 2020

    1. Bottas
    2. Verstappen (+12.2)
    3. Kvyat (+18.4)
    4. Hamilton (+19)
    5. Perez (+24.3)
    6. Ricciardo (+35.5 - five-second penalty to come)
    7. Leclerc (+38.2)
    8. Ocon (+40.5)
    9. Vettel (+44.3)
    10. Raikkonen (+45.8)

You'd expect Hamilton to get third ahead of Kvyat, but he's going to have to go some to get Verstappen.
