Lando Norris is third at the moment, then come the two Racing Points.

Vettel in 10th was only three hundredths of a second quicker than Gasly. Is this going to be a disastrous day for them?

Four minutes left in this session. Still time for things to change.

  8. Tyre choice for Q2?published at 14:30 British Summer Time 4 July 2020

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

I think Mercedes could run a medium tyre in Q2 - not based on Q1 pace but on practice pace. I think it's what cost Charles Leclerc the grand prix win here last year; starting on the wrong tyre - the soft - when everyone else was on the medium.

Max Verstappen is trying his luck on the mediums, everyone else is on the softs.

Now on to Q2. Fifteen cars, 15 minutes, top 10 advance into the shootout for pole position. Whatever you set your fastest lap on in this section will be the tyre you start the race on (if you finish in the top 10).

Anthony Short: Great lap by George Russell just missing out on Q2, positive signs for Williams.

Rob Manhire: I'd say that Williams is still very slow but George Russell is VERY quick and is making the car look better (less worse?!).

Shocker for Alfa Romeo. They went out early, knew they were up against it here and Kimi Raikkonen starts on the last row of the grid - on merit really. What a poor display from them

Stewart: If Mercedes do dominate here today and tomorrow, it's going to kill off interest in the season for casual fans. It doesn't matter if there are close battles for 9th and 10th, we want to see battles for the lead and multiple race winners.

Jeremiah Kariuki: Was expecting to see the Mercedes on harder spec tyre compared to the other teams, But they opt for Softs as well. May be saving Mediums for Q2.
