  11. Red Bull's Mercedes protest rejectedpublished at 10:43 British Summer Time 4 July 2020

Formula 1 officials have rejected a protest by Red Bull against a controversial steering system on Mercedes' 2020 car.

Red Bull alleged that the so-called dual-axis steering system (DAS) broke the rules on two counts.

They said that was because it was an aerodynamic and suspension-related device.

But stewards at the season-opening race decided that it was legal because it constituted a steering device alone.

They said it was "not conventional" but did not contravene the rules on steering.

So it was a great day for Mercedes on the track, and off it too...

  13. Second practice: Mercedes one-two againpublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 4 July 2020

It was a similar situation in the second session, with Lewis Hamilton again the fastest, with team-mate Valtteri Bottas again next, ahead of Racing Point's Sergio Perez's and Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

Max Verstappen had two spins while team-mate Alexander Albon had one, providing an echo of pre-season testing, when they denied the car had an aerodynamic problem despite a number of spins for both drivers.

Verstappen could manage only ninth, with Renault's Daniel Ricciardo fifth, ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris, and the second Racing Point of Lance Stroll. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was only 10th.

  14. First practice: Hamilton fastest as F1 returnspublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 4 July 2020

Lewis Hamilton was fastest in his Mercedes in the first practice session at the delayed start to the Formula 1 season in Austria.

The world champion was 0.356 seconds ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas, both driving black cars to reflect support for anti-racism and diversity. Red Bull's Max Verstappen was 0.602 seconds behind in third. The Dutchman had a spin at the first corner starting his first flying lap on the softest tyre.

The Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel were 10th and 12th but did not run on the fastest tyre, and they have said they expect to struggle this season, at least until their car is redesigned in time for the third race in Hungary in two weeks' time.

McLaren's Carlos Sainz was fourth fastest ahead of the Racing Point of Sergio Perez and the second McLaren of Lando Norris.
