  1. Mercedes back out on toppublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 4 July 2020

Any optimism for Ferrari, as they were one and two, has quickly been wiped out.

Just like session one, just like session two, Hamilton is now first with Bottas second.

Hamilton sets the fastest time of the weekend with a 1:04.130 and Bottas is 0.147 adrift.

The lead Ferrari of Charles Leclerc is more than half a second off the lead. You would be brave to bet against Hamilton claiming the 89th pole position of his career later on today.

The Mercedes pair are now on the softs, so we will see how good those Ferrari times have been.

The Ferraris are back out there and still on the softs. They are currently one and two, with Charles Leclerc's 1:04.703 being 0.148 seconds ahead of Sebastian Vettel.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are third and fourth respectively, but the mediums are their tyres of choice at the moment.

Nicholas Latifi's Williams has been collected and hopefully we will see the Canadian back on track as soon as possible. We're back under way, with just over 20 minutes of the session left.

Where else should host an F1 race in 2020 and why?

Mr Ed Archer: Turkey, turn 8 in a modern F1 car would be immense. Bathurst, now that would be good in an F1 car. Ditch the borefests that are Austria, Hungary and Monaco and promote longer circuits with elevation changes and challenging corners. Reverse tracks would be good also.

JJ Jackson: With question marks over the US races, how many continents does F1 have to visit to count for a championship? Also, some of the tracks mentioned for additional races don't currently host F1. Are they all up to WC standard?

From whatever angle you look at it, it's not a great start for Nicholas Latifi's day.

I suspect Nicholas Latifi has done a Daniil Kvyat from yesterday and lost it on traction on the exit, then over-corrected it. I can't remember a Formula 1 car hitting that wall since Austria has come back onto the calendar in 2014.

That won't do anything for Latifi's confidence. He's binned the car, he's now lost track time and then he has to go straight into qualifying.

The first red flag of the season as Latifi's Williams will need to be collected.

    Breaking

This was a weekend Nicholas Latifi has been dreaming of ever since he first sat in a car - his first as a fully-fledged F1 driver.

But he loses it at Turn 1 and the front of his Williams bounces into the tyre wall at speed, with the impact then sending his car right around and he may have damaged the rear as well.

Williams have until 14:00 BST to get it fixed for qualifying.

Lewis Hamilton, on the mediums - compared to the softs of Sebastian Vettel - is now leading the way. Hamilton trims the top time down to 1:05.140 and that is 0.019 seconds faster than Vettel. Leclerc third, Ricciardo fourth, Bottas fifth, Verstappen sixth.

Where else should hold F1 races this year and why?

Steve Harris: These ‘double header' GP’s... Would it be possible to do one clockwise and on anti-clockwise?

Alex Holland-Martin: If you're looking for a place to stay. If f1 went back to Brands Hatch there's a hotel right outside of the circuit.

Stoo G: May have to raid my blog from earlier this year of a fantasy schedule made up entirely of tracks that have never hosted F1 Grands Prix. It's probably a bit too much to hope Macau and Bathurst will make the list, but I'll put them out there...

Where else should hold F1 races this year and why?

James Johnstone: If there are tracks that are desperate to host a GP, have the funds and the required rating, why couldn’t we see some new and old tracks later in the year - Imola, Mugello, Algarve, Sepang (wishful thinking), Hockenheim etc? Better way to spice things up than reverse grids.

What can be said about Formula 1 2020 after one day’s practice at the Austrian Grand Prix? Well, the biggest takeaway is that Mercedes look scarily fast - nothing else was within half a second of them on Friday, no matter which way you looked at it.

Behind them? Well, Racing Point were the stand-outs of Friday, at the head of a tightly-packed bunch of cars with their ‘Pink Mercedes’/‘Tracing Point’ (choose your disparaging copying nickname as you see fit). But Red Bull surely will be closer to Mercedes than they were on Friday and can Ferrari really be as bad as they looked?
