Lewis Hamilton set the fastest ever lap around Silverstone to beat Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas to pole position at the British Grand Prix.

Hamilton, faster on both runs in the final session, was 0.313 seconds clear of Bottas while Red Bull's Max Verstappen pipped Charles Leclerc's improved Ferrari to third.

McLaren's Lando Norris starred with fifth place, ahead of the so-called 'pink Mercedes' Racing Point of Lance Stroll.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel could manage only 10th after struggling all weekend.

Hamilton takes 91st career pole at Silverstone

Reece Young: On the Mercedes dominance - both Red Bull and Ferrari were a few tenths slower than the British GP last year...Mercedes have just developed their car better than anyone else in a year and none of the other top 3 have - in fact have gone backwards.

Jeremiah: Bottas has hopes of getting ahead Hamilton at the start. But it will be a tough one given the hunger for wins Hamilton has. It will be a Mercedes two-horse race. Others can only hope for a bad day for the Silver Arrows.

  6. 'Mercedes way too fast'published at 15:34 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

Max Verstappen, who starts third on the grid: "I think the lap itself at the end of Q2 was good, Mercedes are way too fast, you just have to expect that and do the best you can, and that's P3.

"I'm going to fight and you have a fighting chance starting third.

"The newer cars are very sensitive to the wind, low speed corners and they become like a completely different car. But it was fun to drive today."

  7. 'I started to drift'published at 15:31 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas, who will start second, says: "It was a pretty good qualifying up until Q3. I felt pretty good with the car but in Q3 I started to drift a bit more than I wanted.

"Lewis found a bit more than I did, he did a really good job and he deserves the pole.

"My performance has been pretty good this weekend. Lewis won it here last year from second place with a different strategy to me so hopefully I will get opportunities tomorrow."

  8. 'Valtteri pushing me to the limit'published at 15:29 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

Lewis Hamilton, who qualified in pole position: "Ultimately, there's a real big gap between us and third place and Valtteri is pushing me right to the limit. I made some changes going into qualifying - which was worse.

"There are gusts of wind in different parts of the circuit so it’s like juggling balls while spinning plates. I already had the spin but we managed to compose ourselves. It still isn't perfect but it never gets old."

On no fans being at Silverstone: "You normally have sirens and flags and smoke and the atmosphere is buzzing. We definitely miss the fans. Thanks to the team and the guys at the factory who are constantly working tirelessly and I'm proud to be a part of it."

    Hamilton on pole at Silverstone

AGL: Lewis once again showing why he’s so good. Spinning in Q2 then just throwing down the gauntlet. Bottas did a great job as well, also great to see Norris up in 5th! Should be a great race tomorrow.

Francesca Gunn: Hammertime!!!! Never doubt Hamilton! He always comes through in Q3!! And again over a second to 3rd!!!

  12. Top 10 in Q3published at 15:13 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    8. Daniel Ricciardo (Renault)
    9. Esteban Ocon (Renault)
    10. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari)

Max Verstappen snatched third right at the end of the session, but that is a miserable qualifying for Sebastian Vettel.

    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Max Verstappen is half a second slower than his own qualifying time from last year. That's not the first time we've seen times like that from Red Bull. Red Bull are struggling car-wise and there are serious questions to be asked.

  17. Postpublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

Lance Stroll, who only just squeezed into Q3, is currently set to join Max Verstappen on the second row.

It's an all Ferrari third row as it stands and an all McLaren fourth row and an all Renault fifth row.

Two minutes for that to change.

  18. Postpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

Five minutes to go. It is Mercedes versus Mercedes. Hamilton v Bottas. World champion versus world runner-up. Current Championship leader v current second-placed driver.

Everyone else can just watch on in admiration / jealousy.

  19. 'Now more pressure on Bottas'published at 15:02 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live

Bottas was ahead for two corners, was the fastest man through Stowe as well - and there's only one corner left - and he lost a tenth and a half to Hamilton. We didn't quite see where it went wrong for him. There's now more pressure on Bottas.

  20. Postpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

Hamilton is an incredible 1.147 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen in third. The Dutchman is nearly a full second behind Valtteri Bottas. What a piece of machinery this Mercedes is.
