A great lap from Lando Norri S. He jumps up to fourth as the times are tumbling. Max Verstappen is ahead of him, with the two Mercedes ahead of the Dutchman.

Anyone thinking Friday's action was going to see a change at the top is going to be disappointed. Both Mercedes improve with Hamilton still leading the way with a 1:26.332, Valtteri Bottas is second 0.194 behind.

Everyone else, a long way back. Verstappen nearly six tenths off the top and the two Racing Points a second adrift.

There is only 0.051 between the two pink cars as Hulkenberg is doing a great job in only his second day in the car. This is a great audition to get himself a drive somewhere for next season.

Andrew Davies: Silverstone village on Saturday night is so the best place to be - that little pub - home owners front gardens like a bbq convention - super.

Carrie Murray: First Grand Prix I went to was Silverstone 2015. My fave driver Jenson, driving for my fave team McLaren and he retired early, got his autograph after the race after going on track over to the McLaren pits.

There's a lot of noise going on in Alex Albon's garage. His car is still up on the high stands being worked on. He's not going anywhere in a hurry...

    The session ends at midday.

Mercedes weren't top of either session yesterday. It's taken 20 minutes to show they were just kidding us on Friday.

Lewis Hamilton jumps to the top with a 1:26.825 on the softs, with Valtteri Bottas, on the mediums, second 0.311 seconds behind.

More problems for Alexander Albon. He smashed up his Red Bull yesterday and his mechanics are frantically working on some kind of electrical issue.

Nulla Pax: Worked at the 2013 Silverstone as security in the grandstand opposite the wing. I was directly opposite when Vettel came to a stop. Had to keep a lot of amateur photographers back behind the railings

Gareth Morris: Being carved up on local roundabout by a Red Bull press car taking guests to the circuit in the morning of the event a few years ago. Was a proper Albon v Lewis attempt by them to get round me. Thankfully no contact that time.

How Albon wishes there wasn't any contact too, Gareth!

Ferrari’s difficult season continues at Silverstone. Charles Leclerc was an unexpected fourth quickest on one-lap pace, splitting the Mercedes, on Friday, but that hid a tragically poor long run, on which he was close to two seconds a lap on average slower than Valtteri Bottas on the medium tyre. The one-lap pace was the result of a low-downforce set-up, which was clearly not working for a long run.

“It wasn’t that bad,” Leclerc said, “just on the race pace we have been struggling massively. But the qualifying pace is a bit better than we expected. This is good. We have taken quite a radical approach with our downforce level so it seems to pay off in qualifying but it doesn’t in the race so we have to analyse the data and see what we do.

"We will try to understand what we can change to maybe sacrifice a bit of the qualifying pace to be better in the race.” Sebastian Vettel had a terrible day, losing nearly all of the first session to an intercooler problem and then some of the second with a problem with his brake pedal, which needed a new pedal box.

  15. Postpublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 1 August 2020

Sebastian Vettel, after his Friday was ruined by an intercooler problem with his Ferrari in session one and then a brake pedal issue in session two, is the first to set a lap today and it has come on the mediums.

It's a 1:29.562 to get us going - two seconds slower than Lance Stroll's best effort in FP2.

Red Bull have endured a difficult start to the season, after coming into it expecting to be able to challenge Mercedes for the championship. The car has been difficult and unpredictable, and the drivers have found it easy to lose control, as a result of aerodynamic instability where the car suddenly loses downforce mid-corner.

The team have been throwing new parts at it trying to fix it, and both Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon reported progress on Friday, despite Albon’s heavy crash after yet another mid-corner oversteer moment at Stowe in the second session.“

We’ve definitely made a step as a team,” Albon said. “The car feels good and we expected worse, to be honest. The car was hooked up straight away. I’m sure the Mercs are hiding quite a lot but as a car it feels well balanced. But the weather is different to what we expect on Saturday so it will be a reset.”

Verstappen described their situation as “looking quite decent”. Of his crash, Albon said: “I have had bigger crashes. It’s OK. The rear went quite quickly and I struggled to correct it. I thought I had it but then you get the tank-slapper as well. We’ll have a look at the data and see.”

Tobi Adepegba: I've been to one Grand Prix in my life and it was Silverstone 2013 (The year before the Hybrid era). It was an amazing day and it confirmed how much love I have for the sport.

RantingMrP: The sight of an empty Silverstone is a reminder of just how much we take for granted. Grateful that we can watch racing at all! Those Pink Panthers are looking mighty, but I don't see anyone stopping Lewis Hamilton this weekend other than himself.
