Lewis Hamilton took an extraordinary victory in a dramatic finish to the British Grand Prix despite suffering a puncture on the last lap.

The Mercedes driver's left-front tyre failed halfway around the last lap but he held on in front of Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Verstappen would have won had he not stopped late for fresh tyres in a successful quest for the point for fastest lap.

Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas also punctured, two laps earlier, which dropped him out of the points.

The Finn finished 11th and dropped to 30 points behind Hamilton in the title race, a potentially devastating blow to his hopes so early in a season truncated by the coronavirus.

McLaren's Carlos Sainz was a third driver to suffer a left-front puncture, his like Hamilton's on the last lap, and he dropped from fourth place to 13th.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was promoted from fourth to the final podium spot by the late drama.

  4. 'Right to the limit'published at 16:58 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

Lewis Hamilton talks more about those dramatic final couple of laps to Sky Sports: "Your heart drops. Up until then everything felt relatively fine. I heard of Valtteri's tyre going and I'd looked after mine relatively well. I backed off a bit and didn't push through the right handers.

"I am so grateful the tyre did not deflate through a high speed corner. It would have been a disaster.

"I nearly didn't make it through the next two corners but rather than panicking I thought how do I get this home. As I started to accelerate the tyre deflated more and I was concerned I would lose the wing and the wing would go under the car. I made some switch changes and just tried my hardest to get round.

"I could hear the seconds being counted down as Max Verstappen was catching me. Thankfully, with support, we managed to bring it home.

"Survival instincts come over you. Right to the limit."

With his win today, Lewis Hamilton has surpassed Ayrton Senna's record for most races led from start-to-finish.

  6. Where next?published at 16:54 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

It's the same time, same place next week as for the first time there will be back-to-back F1 championship races in England in successive weeks.

The race is called the '70th Anniversary Grand Prix'. A similar dramatic ending would be great.

  7. 'It happened so suddenly'published at 16:51 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas, who finished 11th after a puncture: "Really disappointing and very unlucky, also where I got the puncture. I had to go round the whole lap.

"I was trying to put pressure on Lewis, I was starting to get more and more vibration. It just happened so suddenly, I couldn't have predicted it. Not much more to say really."

On tyre concerns ahead of next week's race at Silverstone: "It is going to be an issue for everything next week. For sure one stop will not happen with the compounds we will have. We need to move on I guess."

  8. 'I got distracted'published at 16:51 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

AlphaTauri's Daniil Kvyat, who crashed out: "I still don't understand what happened. I was changing switches on the steering wheel and I got distracted.

"We were having some issues with the car and I had to change some parameters. Very distracting."

  9. Debris contributed to last-lap drama?published at 16:50 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner: "The tyre that has come off Max's car has a deep groove. There is no guarantee he would have won the race. Lewis rode his luck and managed to get the car home.

"We could see that because the front tyre was a concern here Mercedes were taking it easy in some of the corners, more so than we were.

"We were surprised to see the issues towards the end of the race. Perhaps there was a bit of debris out there that caused the issue."

With his latest win, Lewis Hamilton now holds the record for most wins by a driver at their home grand prix.

His seven victories at Silverstone takes him above Alain Prost, who won the French GP six times.

  11. 'One of my best'published at 16:48 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

Pierre Gasly, who finished seventh: "That was amazing and probably one of my best races. I am really happy we can come out with a couple of points.

"We are quiet but we try to maximize our chances every weekend. I was surprised to keep up the guys this weekend but feeling great in the car. Making small steps every weekend."

That may have been the first race win by a driver on three wheels in Formula 1 history.

The only similar incident that comes to mind is when Stefan Johansson crossed the line in second place with a tyre puncture at the 1987 German Grand Prix.

Riasat: Today’s race was like the movie cars.

Kyle Buse: Sad the sport needs tire punctures to make it interesting though.

Leslie Yew: It was really boring except for the end. The end saved the race. Not looking forward to another week of this.

This win was Lewis Hamilton's 87th of his career and his third in a row. He is now only four victories away from equalling Michael Schumacher's overall record of 91 wins.

If Hamilton keeps on winning he could equal former Ferrari man Schumacher's record at Monza, which is normally Ferrari's home race. Hamilton could then break the record at Mugello, which is actually Ferrari's home track. Ouch.

  15. How they standpublished at 16:39 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

If Lewis Hamilton's last-lap puncture had seen him unable to finish then his world title lead would still be at five points, as it was at the beginning of the day.

But Hamilton somehow managed to limp home with only three inflated tyres to win the race and create a 30-point advantage in the title race.

A huge day in the 2020 season.

  16. 'A difficult race'published at 16:35 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

McLaren's Lando Norris, who finished fifth: "It was a very difficult race. I don't think we had the best pace compared to yesterday. I made a couple of mistakes but after that it was not too bad.

"It was difficult to keep Daniel Ricciardo behind. Not a lot we could do, I didn't think we had the pace compared to them."

  17. 'Disappointing'published at 16:30 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

McLaren's Carlos Sainz who dropped from fourth to finish 13th on the last lap because of a late puncture: "I am disappointed, not going to lie. At the same time everything was done correctly until the last two laps so I cannot be too tough on the team or myself.

"I think we are making very good progress as a team. The car feels a step up from last week. Unfortunately in the races we are still struggling a bit compared to Renault. We still have some work to do to understand the race pace."

Alexander Albon got a five-second penalty for getting the blame for an incident that saw Kevin Magnussen's race end early. Without that penalty, Albon would've been seventh, but eighth it is.
