  1. How they finishedpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

Normally you would say a gap of nearly six seconds between first and second, and more than 18 seconds between first and third would be a dull conclusion.

Not when tyres were popping like balloons all over the place, including on the winner's car.

Mercedes have the fast car and they were cruising but maybe Bottas and Hamilton were pushing each other too hard. They are title rivals and both came into trouble, but that points swing is huge.

  4. 'We did the best we could today'published at 16:09 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who finished third:"It was a very tricky race. As soon as I heard Valtteri had a tyre problem I slowed down quite a lot.

"Looking at us we have done the best we could have done today. I am very happy with how I managed the tyres from beginning to the end and I am happy with the balance of the car.

    "We took our opportunities today."

  5. 'It was pretty lonely'published at 16:06 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

Max Verstappen, who finished in second place: "It was lucky and unlucky.

"The Mercedes were too quick. The tyres didn’t look great with 10 laps to go, they didn’t look pretty.

"Valtteri [Bottas] got a puncture, then they boxed me to go for the fastest lap, then Lewis [Hamilton] got a puncture. But second is a good result.

"I told my engineer to drink and to stay hydrated! It was pretty lonely; I was just managing my pace and looking after the tyres."

  6. 'My heart nearly stopped!'published at 16:02 British Summer Time 2 August 2020

Race winner Lewis Hamilton: "Up until that last lap everything was relatively smooth sailing. Valtteri was really pushing incredibly hard, I was doing some management of the tyre. When I heard his went I looked at mine and it seemed fine.

"The car was turning no problem, last few laps I started to back off and then last lap it deflated. That was a heart in the mouth moment. You could see it falling off the rim. From then I was just managing it and I was just praying to get round and not be too slow. I didn't think I would make it round the last two corners.

"I was really chilled for some reason at the end. Bono was giving me the information about the gap. It was coming down quite quickly but the car seemed to turn OK. I got to 15 and that is where it was a struggle so I gave it full gas out of there down to 16.

"I have definitely never experienced anything like that on the last lap and my heart definitely nearly stopped."

It wasn't a classic race until the last two laps but then it has gone down in history as a classic race because of those last two laps.

Wow! Weird and close. Lewis Hamilton deserved the win clearly but he was lucky getting to the finish. Another couple of corners and he would not have won the race.

The front left takes such a load at Silverstone. There will be a big inquest at Pirelli. We have another race at this track next week with softer tyres.
