Jeremiah Kariuki: Looking at the start, and with no rain, hopeful that Bottas will have a good start. But not good enough to challenge a bolting Hamilton. Ricciardo could however be chasing both Bottas and Max to Turn 1. No surprise if he is P2 or P3 there.

  6. Tyre timepublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

These are the tyres for today's race. Our front three - Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen - all start on the mediums with Daniel Ricciardo in fourth on the softs and looking for a lightning start.

  7. Ferrari fans remember the good timespublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

For Ferrari to be struggling here is a rarity and indeed they have been the most successful team in the history of the Belgian Grand Prix, winning 18 times since it became a part of the Formula 1 world championship in 1950.

Sebastian Vettel triumphed in 2018 with Charles Leclerc starting and ending at the front last year.

Vettel's win in 2018 was Ferrari's first success since a run of three wins in three years when Kimi Raikkonen won in 2007, Felipe Massa triumphed a year later and Raikkonen won again in 2009.

  9. No miracles for Ferraripublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

The Ferraris start 13th and 14th, the sort of positions they have not been used to since… well, since 1980, really. Yes, there have been worse qualifying sessions for Ferrari since - Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were 19th and 18th in Silverstone in 2014 and 19th and 21st in Malaysia in 2010 - but those were the result of the team messing up strategy in the wet.

This, though, was on pure performance, and it was not that unexpected, given how slow the cars have been on the straight this year.Charles Leclerc, who won from pole in Belgium last year, was nearly 0.5secs slower year to year, whereas Lewis Hamilton’s pole lap on Saturday was two seconds quicker than he qualified in 2019. Leclerc said: “It is a big step back compared to the others. It’s not a good day but it is like this at the moment, we need to keep working and everyone in the team needs to keep their heads up. I can understand the fans at home are very disappointed but we will try to make the best race possible even though we can’t expect any miracles.”

Rivals believe Ferrari are paying the price for bending the rules on engines last year, and have fallen back as a result of a series of clarifications since, and the infamous private settlement between the team and the FIA last winter. And Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff, whose relationship with Ferrari’s Mattia Binotto has worsened in the wake of the engine controversy, was moved to make some withering comments: “It’s not good for Formula 1, it’s not good for the competition at the front and I very much feel with all the tifosi and employees of Ferrari for this lack of performance. One must question the priorities that have been set in recent times, and where the lack of performance comes from.

Actually it’s wrong to say ‘Ferrari’ priorities because that drags Ferrari and everybody at Ferrari into this. It’s maybe the decisions that have been made within the team, from certain members of the team.”He didn’t directly refer to anyone in particular, but it is no secret who he means.

They hog the front row today so will probably have a bigger lead by later this afternoon.

Six races of the season gone with four wins for Lewis Hamilton and one apiece for Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen.

That leaves Hamilton with a 37-point lead at the top. Will that be extended or narrowed by the end of the day?

  12. A 13-car pile-up and an underdog win - remembering the craziness of Spa 1998published at 13:22 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

    SpaImage source, F1

We've had some special races at Spa. In 1998, it was an absolutely amazing few hours of racing.

"Oh, this is terrible, this is quite appalling, this is the worst start to a grand prix I have ever seen in the whole of my life."

Legendary commentator Murray Walker was seldom lost for words and true to form they did not fail him when it came to calling the incredible 1998 Belgian Grand Prix.

It was an enthralling event that featured a 13-car pile-up, spectacular crashes, a furious pit-lane bust-up, horrendous weather from start to finish and a maiden win for one of the sport's underdogs.

Tom McQuillin: It says a lot about the competitiveness of Formula 1 that fans are literally desperate for there to be rain just to level the field out a little bit. The new regulations cannot come soon enough and I absolutely cannot wait!

Nulla Pax: I just want some entertainment today please. Started a new job last week and it includes permanent Saturdays so no more free practice or qualifying fun for me.

Today's race will be preceded by a minute's silence in memory of Formula Two driver Anthoine Hubert.

The French driver died after crashing in an F2 race at last year's meeting at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

An emblem that reads AH19 will also be displayed on all the F1 cars.

Hubert was a close friend of many current F1 drivers including Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc.

Matthew Murnaghan: I hope it rains today, I like to see a lot of action when rain comes.

Bob McFeil Esq: Today’s race will be determined by the weather. If we have a dry one, it should be good but predictable in terms of the winning team. If it’s wet, it will be a thriller.

Nick Golding: Expecting a Lewis win, Verstappen to be greatest threat potentially. Would love to see a fight between the two or with Bottas. If not then a Ricciardo podium would be nice.

It's been far too long since we saw a Ricciardo 'shoey' for a podium finish.

  20. Can Ricciardo break the top three?published at 13:02 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

    Daniel RicciardoImage source, Reuters

Perhaps the stand-out performance of qualifying was Daniel Ricciardo in fourth in the Renault. The Australian was third after the first runs but was pipped by former team-mate Max Verstappen on the second ones. “It was quite funny actually,” Ricciardo said. “I got out of the car in parc fermé and I looked over in his direction and he was already looking at me.

"I think he was waiting for my response and we both gave each other a friendly middle finger. It was a little bit of banter.” What can Ricciardo do in the race, with his low-downforce set-up that has made the Renault the quickest car in sector one all weekend?

“Max and the two Mercedes have been for the most part in a league of their own on Sundays this year,” Ricciardo said. “It would take something extra to hang with them for the whole duration. But we do have strong first and third sectors so if we could get ahead, maybe it is a track we could defend on.

“They are very strong in the second sector but it is very tricky to overtake in the second sector. I’ll certainly try to make life difficult for him and the Mercedes guys if that was somehow in reach.”
