  2. 'Win will be very tricky'published at 12:58 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who starts third, speaking to Sky Sports: "We will find out through the race how competitive we are. We will try to follow them through the race and see what happens. We will see.

"A win will be very tricky. You never know, maybe the weather? It is sunny at the moment, you don't want that."

Stepping out of his car at the end of qualifying, Valtteri Bottas admitted he had no answer for Lewis Hamilton. “The second run felt actually pretty good overall, so I don’t really know why the gap to Lewis [is big],” he said. The answer, team boss Toto Wolff said, was partly that Bottas “struggled with the set-up particularly in Q3 and you can see that on the data, that there was just a little bit more sliding exiting the corners”.

And partly what Wolff described as an “extra-terrestrial performance” from Hamilton. Bottas, though, said: “I’m not too bothered, because I know that second place is quite a good place to start here. It should be an interesting run into Turn Five.” Hamilton lost the lead to Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari up there in 2018. Can Bottas do the same, and kick some life back into his title challenge?

  4. 'Exit of Turn 1 is everything'published at 12:54 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, who starts on pole: "It’s probably in the top two, top three of trickiest starts.

"You can get a good start away from the grid but the exit of Turn 1 is really everything."

  6. The starting gridpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

That means we start off like this...

Ferrari have won this race in both of the past two years - Sebastian Vettel in 2018 and Charles Leclerc last year. It be an amazing performance if one of them even gets themselves on to the podium this year.

    Leclerc starts 13th, Vettel 14th.

  8. 'Almost perfect'published at 12:45 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Lewis Hamilton described his Belgian Grand Prix pole laps - he did two quicker than anyone else - as almost perfect. And they looked it. The onboard footage was spectacular. Flat in Eau Rouge - of course, these days. More remarkably, flat through Malmedy, the right-hander after the Les Combes chicane at the top of the hill. And not only flat through the double-left hander at Pouhon, but an upshift to eighth gear mid-corner.

A stunning demonstration of superiority of man and machine. And with that, pole number 93 was in the bag. Will win number 89 follow today? Up front is not necessarily the best place to be on lap one at Spa, with that long drag up the Kemmel Straight. It could be busy up there.

  9. 'Rest in power, my friend'published at 12:43 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

And Hamilton immediately dedicated his pole position to actor Chadwick Boseman, who starred in Black Panther and died aged 43 of colon cancer on Friday.

"That one is [for] Chadwick, Chadwick Boseman. Rest in peace," said Hamilton over team radio.

  12. More brilliance?published at 12:30 British Summer Time 30 August 2020

Once again, for the 93rd time in his career, Lewis Hamilton was the star of qualifying to ensure he starts at the front of the Belgian Grand Prix.

Ferrari had the glory last year, but they've gone from winning here in 2019 to being dumped back to the seventh row after a nightmare weekend so far for them.

Spa is always one of the best tracks of the season and this is set up nicely to be a thrilling few hours.

Will it be another day of Hamilton brilliance? Let's find out.
