    Vettel spins on opening lap

James Stevenson: Has Vettel’s head gone? Is it somewhere else now he is without a team next season?

AGL: The Ferrari is a poor car this year compared to last year but Vettel looks past it at the moment. Unforced error and at the back on turn 1. Bet Ferrari can’t wait to get rid of him.

Rob Hill: I'm no Ferrari fan but I feel bad for Vettel. He's a man trapped inside a living nightmare driving that car.

Seeing the start again Vettel loses it, nearly wipes out Carlos Sainz, nearly smashes into Romain Grosjean, spins and drops to last spot.

Think that goes down as another driver error from the four-time world champion.

  3. Bottas holds onpublished at Lap 2/52

Bottas has just held on on the first lap, but something is up with Vettel, who has slipped to the back of the pack. A bad start for Charles LeCcerc as well who has slipped back a couple of positions

A quick reminder on how we start. Mercedes have won all four races this season - Valtteri Bottas the first one then the past three for Lewis Hamilton.

As always they're the two to beat and they hog the front row.

The question is, who isn't? I know I'm not meant to be biased. But go on Nico. You can do it!

Racing Point team owner Lawrence Stroll speaking to Sky Sports: "There is no doubt that there was a lack of definition on the clarity of transitioning from listed to non-listed parts. The other teams are certainly entitled to their opinions, I think they are equally upset that we are performing as well. If we were running eighth, ninth or tenth, I don't think we would hear from them at all.

"We have not done anything wrong, we feel the penalty is severe both financially and in terms of points. I think the FIA is dealing with this situation remarkably well, I think they are trying to do the best thing for the sport."

  14. 'I am 100% loyal to my team'published at 14:02 British Summer Time 9 August 2020

Lewis Hamilton speaking to Sky Sports on the possibility of renewing his Mercedes contract: "At a time when people are losing their jobs, I feel awkward sitting down and talking numbers when there are people out of work. I am 100% loyal to my team, I don't want to be anywhere else.

On the anti-racism drive in F1: "We can't keep just talking about diversity we have to put things in place. It is not easy to fix. It is generational. As a sport we have a platform with people tuning in to watch, it is entertainment, but there is no reason that there can't be education as well."

Some good reactions from Pierre Gasly. One of his team holds and then drops two tennis balls from above him and Gasly has to catch them before they hit the floor. Which Gasly does. Impressive. I'd have definitely have dropped them.

He's seventh today so will be hoping his reactions are as lightning sharp when it's lights out in 10 minutes' time.

  16. Advantage Bottas...published at 13:59 British Summer Time 9 August 2020

It was a Mercedes shut-out of the front row in qualifying yesterday with Finn Valtteri Bottas edging team-mate Lewis Hamilton by just 0.063 seconds on his final lap to secure pole in a dramatic late heist.

Hamilton has raced into a 30-point lead in the championship standings. Getting into the first corner with his nose ahead of Hamilton is going to be crucial for Bottas today.

Matters remain cordial and harmonious between the two Mercedes drivers for now - and perhaps it will remain that way all year.

But there is no denying the competitive desire burning in both of them. Lewis Hamilton was on Saturday as he usually is when he’s been beaten in qualifying, curt, clipped and taciturn.

Valtteri Bottas was pleased, but well aware that it’s no easy matter keeping Hamilton behind - as he found at last year’s British Grand Prix. “It will be interesting,” said Hamilton. “It is not very easy to follow here but I hope we can have a bit of a race.” Bottas said: “Obviously myself the expectation, there’s nothing more than to win the race when you start from pole.”

Now it's national anthem time. Seeing the empty stands it is still so sad to see on what should be an absolutely incredible day.

But that's how it is in these strange coronavirus times and it has been an incredible effort to have any type of Formula 1 season at all.

Hopefully there will be thousands and thousands of people back at Silverstone in 2021. What a party it will be when everyone can go back there.

Just like last week, a powerful video shot in black and white is played, with all the drivers giving a message to end racism.

Then some drivers 'take a knee', but, as has happened at every race this season, a number of drivers decide to stay standing.

  20. Verstappen's qualifying gamble gives him optionspublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 9 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at Silverstone

Max Verstappen threw the dice in qualifying, opting to go through second qualifying on the hard tyre, so he had it for the race, while everyone else around him has the medium.

This throws up some interesting possibilities, as while the preferred strategy at Silverstone last week was medium-hard, this week the tyres are all one grade softer - and the temperatures are higher - and a one-stop will be tough to pull off.

Verstappen said: “I felt strongly for that tyre because we are already running softer compounds, so we can’t use the hard like last week. So I wanted to go for the hardest option we had. The soft was falling apart so was not an option, the medium was last week’s soft and that was also not an amazing tyre.”

Verstappen felt he had let third slip through his fingers. “We could have been within 0.7secs of the Mercedes we made a few errors which we will learn from and try to do better.” As for the race and whether he can challenge the Mercedes on his alternate tyre strategy, Verstappen recognised that he had to get past Nico Hulkenberg’s Racing Point first. “It will depend on a few things - how my first lap is going to be and if there is a safety car. It felt like a nice tyre so that’s why I am going to give it a go.”
