    Your predictions/hopes for today's race

Steven Hedges: I really hope Bottas takes a lead in the first corner and takes a win and follows it up with a couple more, clawing back points from Hamilton. I would love to see a closer competition at the end of the season and not the championship wrapped up with four races to go.

Aiden: Hulkenberg has shown what could be possible for supposed average drivers in a decent car. I wonder what would happen if you gave everyone the 2020 Mercedes.. be interesting to see who is the actual fastest driver and not just in the fastest car.

  3. 'We'll fight'published at 13:42 British Summer Time 9 August 2020

    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Not a great weekend for McLaren so far, with Lando Norris 10th on the grid and Carlos Sainz not making the top 10 in 13th. But the team were realistic about it.

“I am still reasonably happy,” Norris said. I don’t think there was a lot more in the car. A lot of the time, we have done exceptionally well and better than we should have done, and were expecting and when the other drivers do the job they should do and put the lap together, they are ahead of us.

"I don’t think we are shocked with P10. We said at the beginning of the weekend we would struggle to get into Q3 and here we are. It sucks saying P10 but I am still happy with that.”Sainz was afflicted by an overheating problem that was affecting only his car, which required the team to open up some bodywork, which has a knock-on aerodynamic effect.

Sainz said he was “a bit surprised” by McLaren’s lack of pace. “I will be carrying this problem into the race which is not ideal, but I still think we have some options.”

  7. We are struggling for now - Leclercpublished at 13:35 British Summer Time 9 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at Silverstone

Charles Leclerc took a superb third place at the British Grand Prix, and was probably the driver of the weekend. But he will struggle to do the same this time around, starting from eighth place

Leclerc stuck with the same “aggressive” low-downforce set-up that had worked so well for him last weekend but it has not gone so well.“I am definitely happy with the job I’ve done but it was not enough,” he said. “We are starting P8 and we are struggling for now and for the race pace we will be struggling a bit more because of our aggressive downforce levels which is lower than everybody else which puts us a bit in difficulty. It is going to be tricky but I will do my best. We have to drive the car like this because putting more downforce will make us slower. it is not easy but it is life for now.”

Team-mate Sebastian Vettel was struggling again. And although he halved the gap to Leclerc to half a second, he qualified 12th and starts 11th after Esteban Ocon’s penalty. “We have worked a lot on the car,” Vettel said: “It feels better, but we are as slow as last weekend. On the bright side, I had good laps, but I don’t think there was an awful lot in my car.”

Such a shame that there are no fans cheering on George Russell in his home race. There would have been huge celebrations at him moving into Q2 yesterday.

Still a very impressive performance from the young Englishman and he starts 15th. Is today the day he grabs the first point of his career?

  11. 'Pretty mega'published at 13:26 British Summer Time 9 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at Silverstone

Renault have made a noticeable step forward this weekend, and Daniel Ricciardo starts in a very strong fifth place on the grid after a stellar qualifying performance. “It was pretty mega,” the Australian said. “It was really cool. We’ve certainly found something. The strength is coming from the rear of the car.”

Renault have worked hard for this season to improve the car’s performance at the rear and in high-speed corners, and a secret set-up tweak before this weekend’s race has further helped. Ricciardo’s big concern for the race is he has only one set of hard tyres for the race, even if they are new, whereas everyone else around him has two. He says he hopes that’s not a problem but he didn’t sound too convinced.

“Time will tell,” Ricciardo said. “I only realised on Friday evening we were the only ones who put hards on. I was asking a few more questions after that even though it was too late. I don’t want to sit here now and say we messed up. I don’t think that’s the case, yet. Hopefully not. I think we’ll be OK. If it’s a two-stop, it will be two mediums for us not two hards. On distance that’s fine, but the question then is, is the medium competitive?”

It's been a good couple of weeks for Daniel Ricciardo - fourth last week and he starts fifth today. This is his last season with Renault though as he jumps to McLaren in 2021.

Renault's Daniel Ricciardo speaking to Sky Sports: "Time will tell as to whether the move to McLaren in 2021 is the right call for me. I don't want to say time is running out, but every year is important now. We will see in six months time or so."

    Your predictions/hopes for today's race

Ian: I hope Hamilton gets to Turn 1 first and Bottas is his rear gunner. I sincerely hope the Hulk gets the podium he has been after all these years and his neck holds out! With the new Pirelli Pastry tyres life could get very interesting for all the teams today in the heat.

  14. Tyre management will have a big impact on today's strategypublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 9 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Most are expected to do a two-stop strategy, with tyres one grade softer than last weekend. The favoured strategy is likely to be medium-hard-hard, but this is not available to all.

There is a chance that some will try a one-stop if they start on the hard, but there is a risk with this approach that the tyres run out of grip in the last 10 laps and - in the context of the failures last weekend - that they will puncture.

The expectation after the problems of last Sunday is that teams will be careful on the length of stints. Tyre management will be considerable with the softer compounds. And the safety-car chance is high.

  16. Pirelli blame 'extremely long use' for failurespublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 9 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

    Lewis HamiltonImage source, Reuters

And, as you would expect, there was a big inquest at Pirelli.

Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli says the failures suffered by three cars near the end of the British Grand Prix were caused by "extremely long use" on a demanding circuit.

Both Mercedes and the McLaren of Carlos Sainz suffered left-front failures in the final three laps of Sunday's race.

Pirelli said tyres had been stressed by teams running long stints after early pit stops under a safety car. It said the increased speeds of the 2020 cars had also contributed.

Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola said he believed the right-rear tyre failure that triggered Daniil Kvyat's Alpha Tauri to crash on lap 12 was "probably caused by a slow puncture", but he said that the tyre had been sent back the company's base in Milan for further investigation. This was the incident that prompted the safety car that led to the early pit stops.

Pirelli stuck with its decision to supply softer tyres for this weekend's 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, but is stipulating increased minimum tyre pressures "to reduce the stress on the construction".

  18. Hamilton wins British GP after puncture on last lap - read the reportpublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 9 August 2020

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer at Silverstone

    Lewis HamiltonImage source, Reuters

But it all could've been so different in the title picture. Here's a quick recap of a truly incredible ending at Silverstone last week.

Lewis Hamilton took an extraordinary victory in a dramatic finish to the British Grand Prix despite suffering a puncture on the last lap.

The Mercedes driver's left-front tyre failed halfway around the last lap but he held on in front of Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Verstappen would have won had he not stopped late for fresh tyres in a successful quest for the point for fastest lap. Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas also punctured, two laps earlier, which dropped him out of the points and he finished 11th.

McLaren's Carlos Sainz was a third driver to suffer a left-front puncture, his like Hamilton's on the last lap, and he dropped from fourth place to 13th. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was promoted from fourth to the final podium spot by the late drama.
